Rogue Food Unites (RFU) coordinates with locally-invested food businesses to provide fresh, nutritious, and shelf-stable ingredients, assembled and delivered to our communities. While meeting the fundamental human right for food, RFU strengthens local economies: fostering collaboration, preserving jobs for residents, building resilience, and ensuring food security and sovereignty in Oregon. RFU was formed in 2020 out of the dual disasters of the Almeda and Obenchain fires and the impacts of COVID-19 on local communities. Within a short time, RFU began contracting with the State of Oregon to supply hot meals, food boxes, and solidarity cards in Deschutes, Douglas, Klamath, Josephine, and Jackson Counties. RFU has provided over 2 million meals to displaced and impacted people, including 600,700 hot meals served at recovery sites and delivered to hotels, RV parks and temporary homes and, 38,756 meal kits and provision boxes. Through our partnerships with regional restaurants, farms, vendors, and stores, we have recirculated nearly $20 million into our local economies since September 2020. Since the early days of these disasters, Rogue Food Unites has provided rapid response to the emergency food needs of evacuees and those who lost their homes. This work continues as people move through the complex stages of recovery. Our evolving goal is to provide stable support extending beyond the immediate recovery process to meet the growing and persistent food insecurity affecting our communities, through strategic partnerships and collaborative service delivery. RFU has excelled in creating a distribution system that can evolve and expand in a short period of time, and has continued to modify as the evolution of recovery has changed. RFU helps those who have been most affected - our community members who are elderly, unhoused, economically insecure, including those with underlying health issues, with particular care for culturally specific needs. RFU regularly serves people freely, no questions asked, to receive provisions to feed themselves and their family members. RFU does not require any paperwork, ID, proof of loss or impact, or any other documentation to receive food supplies. RFU serves foods that provide comfort as well as nutrition.

Ginelle moved to the Rogue Valley in 2022 in pursuit of a small-town feel with a big heart and access to outdoor recreation, Ashland checked all the boxes! Through her experience volunteering and supporting emergency relief efforts, Ginelle has a firsthand appreciation for how access to quality resources can transform lives and strengthen communities, inspiring her to join the Rogue Food Unites team.
In her free time, Ginelle loves spending summers whitewater rafting, hiking, and camping, and winters skiing and snuggling with her dog and cat. Throughout the year, she also enjoys teaching yoga and spending quality time with her partner, family, and friends.

Ginelle se mudó al valle de Rogue en 2022 en busca de un ambiente de pueblo pequeño con un gran corazón y acceso a actividades recreativas al aire libre. ¡Ashland cumplía con todos los requisitos! Disasters are growing more frequent and severe.
Over 4,000 Oregonians, including 51 community-based organizations and 10 state agencies, realize this, and worked together on a plan to plan and prepare for wildfire, flood, heat, and other disasters in Oregon.
"Building resilience means investing in the local capacity, opportunities, and relationships that help communities adapt before a crisis, strengthening their economic resilience, and developing the resources they need to put good ideas into practice," Heidi Khokhar, Executive Director at Rural Development Initiatives, said. "We hope this plan can be a catalyst for that work, and if approved, we'll be looking for meaningful follow-through."
Big thanks to our Executive Director, Amber, who attended these meetings with other local organization leaders to discuss some of the difficulties of disasters and the lessons learned, and how to support a community's resilience amidst and after emergencies.

Harry & David shared some of the beautiful bounty of their peach harvest with us! Maybe not millions of peaches, but it sure felt like it. Our market patrons were excited to take these home from our markets, and our volunteers worked for days cutting up hundreds of peaches for freeze-drying. We are so grateful for our local partners and their generosity!

In all seriousness, we WISH there was a documentary coming out about food security. Because here at RFU, we believe that access to healthy and nutritious FOOD IS A FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHT.

One way we fight food insecurity is through our Neighbors Unite Farmers Markets. 3x/week in Jackson County, we provide organic produce purchased from local farmers and food producers to patrons for free. You can find the full schedule on our website or in the pinned post at the top of our social media feed.

What patrons say about our Neighbors Unites Farmers Markets, based on a recent survey:
85% say it helps them by saving money for other household expenses,
78% say it expands their access to fresh and organic fruits and veggies,
41% say it introduces them to new foods,
and 32% say it connects them with other community resources.

Seventy-eight percent of surveyed patrons self-identified as low income, and more than half report that they do not access other food assistance programs. This suggests that RFU’s Neighbors Unites Farmer Market is filling an important gap in our local food-assistance resources.

Hunger happens in all corners of Oregon, from Ashland to Tillamook to Portland to Ontario. And it’s not just about a lack of food. It’s about policy choices that make it harder for people to get by.

And it shows up in impossible choices in everyday moments like stretching groceries, skipping meals, and wondering if there will be enough.

No doubt you’ve heard us say, ‘Food is the First Step’, and arriving with nourishment to show up for our community is what we knew how to do best, and we've continued to shift our models depending on who we are in service to.

Six years later, our neighbors are still rebuilding. Recovery hasn't been linear, and for many families it isn't finished. But the same spirit that showed up in those first smoke-filled days is still showing up now — in the volunteers who keep coming back, in the neighbors who still check in on each other, in the quiet work of making sure no one goes hungry.

Thank you for being part of that with us.

Seguramente ya nos has oído decir: “La comida es el primer paso”, y llegar con alimentos para nuestra comunidad es lo que mejor sabemos hacer, y hemos seguido adaptando nuestros modelos en función de a quién servimos.

Seis años después, nuestros vecinos siguen reconstruyendo sus vidas. La recuperación no ha sido lineal y, para muchas familias, aún no ha terminado. Pero el mismo espíritu que se manifestó en aquellos primeros días de humo sigue presente hoy: en los voluntarios que siguen viniendo, en los vecinos que se cuidan mutuamente, en la labor silenciosa de asegurarse de que nadie pase hambre.
