We tried to Livestream the TVA Board Listening Session across two accounts today and it didn't quite succeed. But luckily it was Live on page and we can reshare it here!

It was a powerful display of unity between environmental groups and labor groups to strongly stand in favor of public power.

Leah McCord, staff member at App Voices and coordinator for CleanUpTVA, opened the speakers with a call to block any nominee to the board who cannot attest to their commitment to the public power model they would be hired to serve.

Tell your Senators and rep to oppose the “One Big Beautiful Act, which would negatively impact community health and safety, jobs and economic development, and the protection of our public natural spaces. The bill:

➡️ Includes handouts to the coal, oil, and gas industries
➡️ Opens up precious public lands to drilling and mining
➡️ Increases timber harvests in national forests
➡️ Guts clean energy jobs

and the Local Power Providers across the valley are asking customers to be aware of the excess strain this cold weather is having on the power grid. These are the kinds of situations where blackouts may be possible, either from the demand being too high or from power lines going down due to ice or tree limb breaks.

Reduce your energy consumption where possible and SAFE. Check your emergency supplies such as extra blankets and water (reminder to protect your water pipes from the cold as well). See if there is a warming shelter or resiliency hub in your area.

Check in on neighbors and loved ones that may need extra assistance. If someone you know relies on electricity for medical needs (from oxygen tanks to temperature sensitive medicines) they should check with their local utility on how to submit a Letter of Medical Necessity to be removed from any optional blackouts.

This holiday season, let us take time to remember the workers who cleaned up TVA’s Kingston coal ash spill. After TVA’s d**e broke 16 years ago on Dec. 22, workers spent six years cleaning up the toxic spill. Hundreds of the cleanup workers are sick & 60+ have died.

They are aiming to raise $3,875 for three billboards at locations near the Kingston coal plant, as well as a full-page remembrance ad in the Roane County News. This December will mark the 16th anniversary of TVA's Kingston Coal Ash Spill, the largest industrial spill in U.S. history. Families and allies of cleanup workers are raising funds to help honor the workers and all whose lives have been forever impacted by this historic disaster.

The Worker Protection Group invites you to help us honor the cleanup workers by contributing to this anniversary project. They are aiming to raise $3,875 for three billboards at locations near the Kingston coal plant, as well as a full-page remembrance ad in the Roane County News.
