Race season has officially arrived in the Rainier region, and it is going to be a big one.

This weekend alone we have two events on the calendar. The Rainier Raid brings adventure racers to Packwood for a 30-hour test of endurance, navigation, and sheer willpower. The Rainier to Ruston race starts in Enumclaw and finishes in Ruston.

And that is just the start. Next month we have the Mount Rainier Race Weekend, the White River 50 Miler, and the inaugural GETMAD ride on July 23. GETMAD stands for Gravel Enumclaw to Mowich in A Day, an 81-mile out-and-back gravel ride organized by the Redmond Cycling Club.

These athletes train year-round for events like these, and they choose our region to put that work to the test. We love having them here. If you see someone in race gear around town this weekend, give them a wave. They've probably earned it.

When we think of summer road trips in the Rainier region, we think of the Chinook and White Pass scenic byways.

We think of winding up toward Sunrise and driving Stevens Canyon Road through the park with the windows down.

And we think of slowly moving along Skate Creek Road, where the trees form a canopy overhead, the sound of the creek follows you, and sunlight breaks through in shifting patches along the way.

Summer here is as much about the drive as it is the destination. To help you plan your trips get more summer vacation inspo visit visitrainier.com/summer

Coffee around Mount Rainier isn’t just about the drink, it’s about where you’re standing when you take that first sip.

In Elbe, it might be coffee and cones at Elbe Market with Bigfoot nearby. In Packwood, it’s Mountain Goat Coffee with elk sometimes wandering through town like they own the place. In Buckley, Anchor House Coffee feels like a true local stop before heading toward the mountain. In Enumclaw, The Dusty Shelf blends great coffee with a small-town bookshop you can easily lose time in.

Inside the park, it’s a different kind of moment—sitting on the porch at the National Park Inn with a cup of coffee and the mountain right in front of you. Or in Ashford, a latte at the Whittaker Bunkhouse Café before heading deeper into the forest.

Or swinging by Gypsy Wagon coffee in Eatonville and grabbing a cup to go and then watching the sun come up at the Tahoma Ridge cottage. And sometimes, it’s even simpler than that. A cup of coffee brewed at a campsite at Mineral Lake Lions Den Campground, watching the sun come up over the water and listening to birds wake up the day.

Around Rainier, coffee isn’t just part of the trip—it’s part of the landscape. visitrainier.com/sips

The funny thing about Mount Rainier is there’s no single “best” scenic spot. The "best" spot for you really depends on the kind of experience you’re looking for.

For some, it’s a relaxed scenic drive with mountain views along the way. For others, it’s a sunrise hike above the clouds, or a full moon hike under the stars.

That’s what makes Rainier so special, you're not limited to one postcard view. It’s a whole spectrum of experiences, shaped by your timing, your interests, and how you want to explore it.

Mount Rainier climbing season is officially underway.

Guided teams are already moving on the upper mountain, and conditions can change fast from one day to the next. Some climbers are reaching the summit. Others are making the decision to turn around and try again another time.

That’s normal on Mount Rainier.

Weather, visibility, avalanche conditions, icefall, altitude, and changing route conditions all factor into summit decisions. Turning around when conditions call for it is part of mountaineering and often the safest choice.

Paradise sits at about 5,400 feet in elevation, but traveling above 10,000 feet on Mount Rainier requires a climbing permit. At that elevation, the mountain becomes a serious alpine environment that demands preparation, experience, proper gear, and respect.

Packwood Lake sits deep in the forest beneath the mountains, reached by a gradual trail that follows an old railroad grade through the woods.

Some visitors come for the day. Others bring camping gear, stay overnight, and wake up beside the water.

Late spring is a beautiful time to explore the Packwood area and spend a little more time outside.
