Food Connection

Food Connection Food Connection collects surplus fresh meals from restaurants and caterers and delivers the food to neighborhoods in need and non profits who feed the hungry.

FOOD CONNECTION IS CURRENTLY ONLY AVAILABLE IN BUNCOMBE COUNTY and MADISON COUNTY in NORTH CAROLINA. Keeping good food from going to waste! Restaurants and caterers often prepare food they don’t end up serving to customers. Maybe it’s a tray of pasta that only a few customers ordered or a platter of sandwiches that wasn’t served. Food Connection picks up that food and delivers it to local organiza

tions or agencies that provide meals for those in need in our community. Food Connection was founded in Asheville, NC in 2015 and is operating throughout Buncombe and Madison Counties. How does It work?
-Donors submit an application which our team will review. Once approved, Food Connections can begin right away.

-Following the North Carolina Food Safety Guidelines donors place the food (minimum of 18 portions) in a recyclable tray, wrap it and label it with donor name, location, a description of the item, and the date and time it was packaged.

-WIthin a 4 mile radius of downtown Asheville donors can send a text message to the Food Connection hotline, and AVL RIDE comes to pick up the food within 30 minutes. What about liability? State and federal laws protect organizations from liability whenever they donate food they believe to be safe. Good faith food donors are not subject to civil and criminal liability
should the product later cause harm to its recipient. Learn more about the federal "Good Samaritan law"

BIG NEWS! 🎉

The Food Connection team is beyond excited to announce that beginning August 1, 2026, Food Connection will expand into the lower level of St. George’s Episcopal Church, creating a dedicated Food Connection Hub in West Asheville.

This partnership is about more than sharing a building. It’s a shared commitment to dignity, access, and ensuring that every neighbor has access to nutritious food when they need it.

This expanded space will help us rescue more food, increase capacity, and serve even more neighbors across Western North Carolina.

More space. More meals. More impact. ❤️

🍑Millions of Peaches🍺! Food Connection is super excited to have been chosen by W**d Brewing’s sustainability committee, the Green Freaks to collaborate on their freshest flavor- “Millions of Peaches”. Join us for the release party of this special brew on Thursday, June 4th from 5–8PM at the Brewpub featuring live music by Beer and Loathing. 💚The Green Freaks selected Food Connection as their partner because we’re keeping our Mother greener by diverting chef-prepared food from the landfill. To date we’ve keep 450 fresh tons of food from going in the trash. Instead this delicious food has provided over 1 million meals to our WNC neighbors. Raise a glass to the Beers that Build program and to Wicked W**d Brewing & the Green Freaks who lead ongoing sustainability initiatives and environmental improvements and support our community in beautiful ways.

We're thrilled to welcome Sunny Point Café as Food Connection's Business of the Month partner for June! ☀️

A beloved Asheville favorite for breakfast, brunch, and lunch, Sunny Point has been bringing people together over great food and warm hospitality for years. With expanded seating and plenty of delicious menu favorites, it's the perfect time to stop by and support a great cause while you're there.

Throughout June, you'll find donation envelopes on tables throughout the restaurant. Every dollar donated will help Food Connection rescue surplus food and provide meals to neighbors experiencing food insecurity. Even better, Sunny Point will match 20% of all envelope donations made during the month!

Thank you to the entire Sunny Point team for your generosity and commitment to helping ensure good food reaches those who need it most. 💚

Today is World Hunger Day 💚

This year’s message — “The End of Hunger is in Our Hands” — reflects the work happening every day at Food Connection. Hunger is about more than food scarcity. Rising costs, transportation barriers, and limited access to nutritious meals impact families across our community every day.

That’s why we rescue surplus prepared food and turn it into ready-to-heat meals for neighbors who need them most. 🍽️

Thank you to our volunteers, food donors, nonprofit partners, and supporters for helping us reduce waste, nourish our community, and make a difference together. ✨
