Hey Appalachia,

I’m on day 11 of a poison sumac reaction which has left me without a comfortable way to text, type or send audio clips as my hands have been bandaged and face swollen to bruising status. On the mend.

All is good! Just behind on the last two weeks of summer updates out of Western North Carolina.

I am unfortunately unable to assist in Bat Cave again today for free lunch, but hopeful to catch up on the incredible last few weeks out of the gorge and surrounding areas as posts become easier to thumb through — pun intended.

Between Thursday to the tornado last night, my house has seen two entire buckets of rainfall, and generally speaking we are tuckered out.

As we all fight different battles I wake up every day and say thank you for my sight and senses.

In January 2025 I began the rewilding process of planting trees, semi-silently, on federal lands obliterated by Hurricane Helene along the WNC portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Friday morning, just after sunrise, we hit 100. 🌳

While I’ve planted each one alone, I carry a gaggle of good folks in my heart’s pocket as without them I would still be obliterated myself. In the cave.

I cried and blew kisses to Deanna and Josh and Dad and Renea and Zanna and Lesley and Skylar and April and Brenda and Amanda and Mia and Amber as in order they taught me soil, and myself, are resilient.

And for always having the bail money ready.

As a recovering live in nanny and educator - turned feral heathen: teach your babies the nuance of when it’s okay to break the rules.

And when they ought to —

Give a damn.

It took so long to upload these that it’s now time to deliver breakfast. We shouldn’t be surprised!
