We are excited to welcome Susan Alta Martin to Lamplight’s Residency at 821 Haywood Road! During her time at Lamplight, Susan will, over two weeks, transform Lamplight into a stage for a durational performance that uses the idea of a waiting room as a metaphor for the current power structure. With the help of local artists, we will transform the space and shift the metaphor so that the locus of power is the community. Swipe to learn more about Susan’s community events!

We’re looking forward to seeing you on FRIDAY for the East-West Asheville Fall Art Walk!

At Lamplight Studios, the evening will take inspiration from the season with a spooky harvest theme, with creative activities and experiences inside and out. ExperimANTal Art Club 🎶🐜 returns to transform the Lamplight yard with outdoor décor for the event. At 7:00 Susie Jermain Rowlette will perform music on the porch. Lamplight resident Elizabeth Ivey will present a selection of work from her September Residency at Lamplight’s residency space at 821 Haywood Road. Decorated pumpkins can be brought to a judging booth to receive a ribbon prize. Jess Spear of Housecat Creative Reuse will offer tarot readings in her studio (link to book in our profile!). Alison Antaramian (pee_paws ) and Swannatopia will close the evening out with a short dance performance that everyone is invited to join.🕸️

Elsewhere along the walk, Harvest Records will host an exhibition of work by Sally Anne Morgan. Haunt: a concept by spoon + hook will create a family-friendly haunted experience inspired by classic homemade Halloween traditions, with creepy sensory elements and playful surprises. Nice Time Glass will invitNice Time Glassto its studio to watch live glassblowing. Make Noise will host a preMake Noise bash where YOU play the songs of a ghost, create the sounds of a haunted house and get your photo with a skeleton.

Woodland Tattoo will offerWoodland Tattoottoos alongside a temporary tattoo table, inviting both adults and kids to see inside the studio and adorn themselves with real or pretend body art. Bagatelle Books will againBagatelle Booksle remaining open for visitors to browse the shop. ReMix It will host an openReMix Itpcycled craft activity using donated materials, and Eikon will showcase work bEikoneral local artists.

This 🌞Saturday September 26th🌞is our current artist in residence, Elizabeth Ivey , final open studio!

This month Elizabeth has created a series of fabric collages and developed “Sunday Dinner at Grandma’s House”—a new body of work honoring the kitchen table as sacred space where Black women hold wisdom, stories, nourishment, and intergenerational presence. Working across handmade collage, fabric, embroidery, and found materials, each piece interrogates memory, legacy, and the quiet power of family ritual. Elizabeth is inviting the community to witness her creative process in real time. Visitors can drop by to see work she’s created this month, ask questions, and experience the studio as a living workspace.

Mark your calendars: the East-West Asheville Art Walk returns on Friday, October 2nd, from 5 to 8 p.m! This is an iterative neighborhood event organized by Lamplight AVL that welcomes art, music, performance, and community into the streets of East-West Asheville.

For the Fall Art Walk, 💫sixteen💫 neighborhood businesses will host free arts-centered events, inviting the public to stroll between locations and experience the creative energy of the district.

Art Walks occur on a seasonal basis, and are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to arrive anytime between 5 and 8 p.m. and stroll between the participating locations throughout the evening. Learn more at the link in our profile: we hope to see you at the 👻Fall Art Walk 🍂

First up on Saturday, from 11AM-3PM, our current artist in residence at ✨Lamplight’s Residency at 821 Haywood Road✨Elizabeth Ivey, is hosting an Open Studio, inviting the community to witness her creative process in real time. Visitors can drop by to see work in progress, ask questions, and experience the studio as a living workspace. No performance or instruction-just authentic creative work on view. This honors the tradition of artists sharing their practice directly with community.

Also on Saturday, from 2-5pm in the Classroom at Lamplight Studios (✨2 Westwood Place✨):

Make Noise will be popping up as a part of 10-Coast: a day-long celebration of the first ten years of the Make Noise 0-Coast synthesizer, happening on Saturday, September 12th on Haywood Rd!

Chris Hamilton and Steve Pescatore’s latest 80-foot tape loop installation will be activated, which utilizes an 0-Coast as its input source! The installation will also feature projections of animations made by Lewis Dahm.

Saturday from 3-6:30 and Sunday from 12-2
at Lamplight Studios (✨2 Westwood Place✨):

Impractical Instruments is currently in our basement space at Lamplight Studios, and there project the Community Garden is a touchable, interactive environment that explores the systems that empower (or disempower) our communities. Engage with these systems through play, movement, music, and peeking into windows.

While our larger event space is in development, we want to make our temporary classroom space accessible to the community for teaching classes and hosting arts-centered gatherings. We are currently in a trial period through the fall, and we’re trying out a 50/50 split model with no upfront cost to the artist. We would love to hear about your class ideas!

We are thrilled to welcome Elizabeth Ivey to the residency. During the month of September, Elizabeth will complete a series of 16×20 framed fabric collages and develop “Sunday Dinner at Grandma’s House” — a new body of work honoring the kitchen table as sacred space where Black women hold wisdom, stories, nourishment, and intergenerational presence. Working across handmade collage, fabric, embroidery, and found materials, each piece interrogates memory, legacy, and the quiet power of family ritual.

“I create as mixed media artist working in collage, textiles, and found materials. My practice centers Black interior life, memory, and generational inheritance through layered narratives. At Lamplight, I will complete intimate-scale framed fabric collages and develop a new body of work exploring the sacred space of family gathering.”

Elizabeth will hold an Open Studio every Saturday in September, inviting the community to witness her creative process in real time. Held from 11AM-3PM at Lamplight’s Residency at 821 Haywood Road.

This past weekend Travis Medford wrapped up his 4-week class at Lamplight Studios: Exploring Abstraction through Collage. The work from the class will be on display at our open studios event, coinciding with Harvest Records sylvanesso Road Trip event on Sunday, September 6th, from 2:30-5PM!

Welcome ankita sharma to Lamplight’s Residency at 812 Haywood! During their residency, ankita will be working on “Human, Vermin” – a 48-hour long live-and-livestreamed, interactive, solo endurance performance that investigates surveillance, mistreatment, and interspecies relationships along the human/animal divide. As human, animal, and environmental rights are systematically dismantled, they ask “How are humans treated “like animals?” How are the politics of disgust mapped on to human and animals alike?” “What does it mean to be a human that’s considered a pest?”

This dance-theater theater experiment uses immersive world-building design, audience interaction, maskwork, and animalistic improvisations to tell a satirical pseudoscience narrative about the evolution of humanity. During the residency, ankita and their collaborator, Soren Kodak, will be setting the space up like an indoor terrarium and creating a list of 48 hour-long improvisational scores to follow, during which they evolve from animal to human and back again.

In-person audiences will be invited into the space to observe and interact with ankita’s animal body according to set tasks, if they choose. There will also be surrounding visual and informational pieces about “Human, Vermin” and its concepts in the space. Come see it in person, or sign up for the livestream at the link in our bio.
