Join Artist in Residency Dawn Roe
for a Community Workshop
May 29th from 1-4PM at West Asheville Park

This Saturday is hosting a site-responsive community workshop held along the waters flowing through Rhododendron Creek in West Asheville Park. Part of an ongoing series of Marking Time With(in) the Water workshops, this action will offer space for neighbors to come into relation with their freshwater spaces, combining careful observation with a collective artmaking process recording imprints of land, water, and human interactions over prolonged moments in time. Participants will meet in the reserved picnic shelter in the park.

Deeply informed by the sharing communities generated through the ongoing work of environmental humanities researcher, Dr. Astrida Neimanis, projects and events will engage with Astrida’s description of hydrofeminism as “an action concept” that begins with “[u]nderstanding our own human bodies as bodies of water, [inviting] us into a different kind of relation to other bodies of water, and a feminism of relation. Hydrofeminism asks: if we are all bodies of water, what does this connect us to? What can we give, and what do we owe?”

Copies of each print will become part of a collective archive of our “hydrocommons” – a term used by Astrida Neimanis to describe the space where embodied human-water relations occur. Workshops participants can pick up washed and dried prints at the closing event on June 6th.

We’re excited to welcome to Lamplight’s Residency at 821 from May 19-June 8!

Dawn’s residency will serve as an incubator for the newly forming body, Hydrofeminist Action Generator (H.A.G.) - an amalgamation of practices reclaiming the hag as her revered self, honored as a conduit between the powers held within the murky darkness of turbulent forms, and the regenerative powers of gathering, rest, and resistance.

We are currently accepting applications for Fall/Early Winter 2026 for Lamplight’s Residency at 821. Applications are due THIS Friday, May 15!

Lamplight AVL seeks artists of all disciplines for solo residencies of up to 28 days to create work and share it with the Asheville community.

The Residency is a space for emerging and established artists in all fields who are looking for a place away from their usual environment to create art and share it with the public.

Located on Haywood Road in West Asheville, NC, we offer residencies at no charge for up to 28 days at a time. We only have one artist in the space at a time, so residents can create freely however they wish. Artists and collectives are welcome to apply together, but during each residency only one artist or group will be hosted.

Our goal is to foster an environment that allows each artist to reflect, create, and share. Link our bio to apply!

We are excited to welcome Zaquia Luisa Salinas to Lamplight’s Residency at 821 this spring! Throughout her time at the residency she will be working on A Call to Prayer: an immersive, participatory performance project that brings together embodied ritual and collaborative installation.

Zaquia will develop installation elements - integrating objects, projections, and spatial design - while inviting community members to participate directly. Visitors are encouraged to contribute offerings to the space and engage in intimate, one-to-one (or small group) performance appointments with the artist.

🌀1-1 or small group appointments:🌀
Join Zaquia Salinas and collaborator Guillermo Castro to contribute an offering to the altar, and experience a 1-to-1 performance.

30-minute individual time slots are available
from 2-8pm on May 4 & 5
and
12-6pm on May 6, 8 & 9

THIS WEEKEND at Lamplight Studios at 2 Westwood Place:

🌞Zine Club with Housecat AVL:🌞

Let’s make some zines! What’s a zine? Basically a DIY magazine, though it could be a public diary (like a blog you can hold in your hands!) or a booklet about your favorite subject, a homemade comic book or just a collection of images you like! Two simple versions of zines will be demonstrated, and plenty of stickers, collage materials, and drawing tools as well. BYO typewriter. You can leave with one original copy to cherish or give away or make a million copies of at the local library copy machine!

Suggested donation of $5-10, but everyone is welcome!

Saturday, April 11th
10AM-12PM

We are excited to welcome Nate Northrup back into Lamplight Residency at 821 this month!

Nate will be creating a site specific body of work that includes interactive sculptural installations, a projection loop, sound, and temporary renderings.

🌀Artist Statement:

“We Are Were” is a glitch where the present fails to overwrite the past and instead runs alongside it. Objects appear not as stable forms but as residues, as if they’ve already happened and are still happening, evidence of events that won’t resolve, identity loops back on itself instead of progressing forward becoming a kind of temporal artifact, still forming, but only out of what it has already been.

🌀Save the Date:
Nate will host Open Studio hours:
Friday, April 24th from 5-9 PM
Saturday, April 25th from 5-9 PM

WOW we are so grateful to…the entire town(!) for showing up for the first East-West Asheville Art Walk!

It was so joyful to open the doors to Lamplight Studios for the first time, introduce you to our artists, and be in community with so many of you on Friday night. This is a dream realized!

HUGE thanks to:

Lamplight Studios at 2 Westwood is an expansion of our mission to support artists in our area. After Helene, we significantly increased the scope of our work by launching a 3 phase recovery initiative: and our new creative home at 2 Westwood Place is the final phase of that initiative. This work relies on donor support. Your donation helps us continue providing arts centered programming for artists and the community. Link in our profile to support our current fundraiser, we’re at 98% of our goal!
