On June 19, 1878, photographer Eadweard Muybridge captured one of the most influential images in the history of photography, a horse in motion that helped answer a question that had fascinated scientists, artists, and horse lovers alike: Do all four of a horse’s hooves leave the ground at the same time while galloping?
Using a series of cameras triggered in rapid succession, Muybridge's groundbreaking photographs revealed movement in a way never seen before, forever changing photography, art, and the future of motion pictures.
You can celebrate this moment and many other that transformed the world of photography in the Asheville Art Museum's Exhibition Poetic Exposures, on view now.
