Through fundraising and community support, we provide essential resources to help all students learn without limits. The Buncombe County Schools Foundation is the non-profit organization created to handle both in-kind and monetary donations made to the Buncombe County School System. In addition, we host several fundraisiers during the course of the year to raise money to offset costs for programs that might not be funded otherwise.

The Buncombe County Schools Foundation (BCSF) hosted its first-ever Learning Society Mixer Thursday evening at District 42 inside Hotel Arras.

Sponsored by Market Connections, the event brought together Learning Society members for an evening of connection and conversation. Attendees had the opportunity to mingle with one another and meet members of the BCSF Board, strengthening relationships that support public education across the district.

The Learning Society is a network of individuals who believe in the power of public education and ensuring students are safe, supported and prepared to succeed. Members can take an active role in the foundation’s work by serving on committees such as scholarships, grants, development and marketing.

Membership in the Learning Society begins with a minimum annual contribution of $1,000. These funds directly support key initiatives and programs, including Teacher of the Year, Principal of the Year, the BCS Joint Military Ball, the BCS Top Scholar Banquet and the BCS Bookmobile.

Through events like the mixer, the foundation continues to build a community of advocates dedicated to making a lasting impact on students and educators.

Sixty-five high school students with aspirations of becoming educators gathered March 2 at Mars Hill University for the annual Teacher Cadet Conference, a daylong event funded by the Buncombe County Schools Foundation.

Students representing Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson, and Swain county schools spent the day exploring the teaching profession through interactive sessions led by current and former Teachers of the Year and school administrators. The conference was designed to provide real-world insight, practical strategies and inspiration for students enrolled in “Teaching as a Profession” courses.

Participants selected sessions based on their interests, allowing them to personalize their experience. Offerings included Classroom Management: Strategies for Success; Growth Mindset in the Classroom; Belonging and Connection: A Human Venn Diagram; Interviewing and Job Preparation; Movement in the Classroom; and focused pathways such as Elementary Education, Arts Education, Career and Technical Education and EC/Special Education, among others.

Mars Hill University President Tony Floyd opened the conference with a warm welcome, encouraging students to pursue their passion for education. He was followed by remarks from North Buncombe High Teacher Cadet coordinator and conference organizer Andrew Shelton, who challenged students to embrace the responsibility and opportunity that comes with shaping future generations.

After transitioning into morning breakout sessions, students paused for a lively pizza lunch, offering time to connect with peers from neighboring districts and to continue conversations sparked during the sessions. The afternoon concluded with additional breakout sessions, equipping students with tools and confidence as they consider careers in education.

The Buncombe County Schools Foundation extends its gratitude to Mars Hill University, each presenter, and every participating school district for investing in the next generation of educators.

We’re proud to celebrate the impact of community partners who show up for our educators in meaningful ways 💙

Yesterday, the Rotary Club of Asheville recognized five outstanding educators as Rotary Teachers of Excellence, including Buncombe County Schools teachers Tonya Gesing (Community High), Robin Franklin (Enka High), and Chandler Greer (A.C. Reynolds High).

These educators were honored during a special luncheon with school and district leaders and each received a $2,000 award in recognition of their dedication to students and learning.

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Asheville for investing in teachers and strengthening public education in our community—and congratulations to these well-deserving honorees!
