🧢 The 2026 Anything Fiber Sale is just about a month away β€” and we’re officially open for fiber donations!

πŸ‘ If you’ve been sitting on fiber supplies you no longer use β€” yarn, fabric, wool, tools, anything fiber β€” now’s the time to bring them in! Every donation helps make the sale possible, and gives those materials a new home.

🏠 Our fiber storage space is open for drop-offs at 239 Amboy Road, Asheville (part of Carolina Powertrain):

πŸ“… Wednesdays | 10am – 12pm
πŸ“… Fridays | 2pm – 4pm

🫢 No appointment needed. Donations are accepted now through Friday, July 17th β€” the sale is July 25th!

😍 A couple of important notes: donations are not accepted at the Local Cloth Studio, and items left outside the facility outside of scheduled hours cannot be accepted. We’re so grateful for the space and want to keep it that way.

πŸ₯° Meet Sue Helmken β€” textile artist, educator, and one of our incredible instructors here at Local Cloth

🧡 Sue brings 40 years of experience in weaving, dyeing, and teaching. Her path in fiber began at East Carolina University and has led her through studies with some of the most respected names in the field β€” Madelyn van der Hoogt, Alice Schlein, Barbara Cooper, Jozef Bajus, Holly Brackmann, and more. She also trained at the Penland School of Crafts and the Corcoran College of Art and Design.

🌱 Her work has been shown in juried exhibitions throughout the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic β€” The Workhouse Center for the Arts, Sweetwater Center for the Arts, The Art League of Alexandria, and more. She also worked with Smithsonian staff on the Hyperbolic Crocheted Coral Reef project at the National Museum of Natural History.

🫢 Sue is teaching Learning to Read Weaving Patterns this June β€” a hands-on class for weavers ready to understand the logic of the draft:
πŸ“ Drawing drafts by hand on graph paper
πŸ’» Exploring patterns with a digital drafting program
🧢 Bringing your own patterns to work through
πŸ” Breaking down any draft so you can read it with confidence

✨ Meet our newest intern, Valeska (she/her)!

🎨 Valeska is a student at UNC Asheville studying Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Arts and Markets β€” and she comes from a long matriarchal line of artists and creative minds, from classical musicians to oil painters.

🧢 She’s mostly self-taught in fiber arts and textile upcycling, with a deep passion for creating, community connection, and environmental sustainability. Her enthusiasm for learning fits right in here.

πŸ¦™ This summer, she’s working on something close to our hearts β€” rebuilding our fiber exhibit, lost during Hurricane Helene in September 2024. In partnership with UNC Asheville, that work is underway again, and we’re so glad to have Valeska’s energy and perspective as part of it.

πŸ₯° Welcome, Valeska β€” we’re so happy you’re here!

πŸ’» Using a computer drafting program to explore patterns digitally
🧢 Bringing your own patterns to work through (welcome and encouraged!)
πŸ” Breaking down the structure of any draft so you can read it with confidence

❀️ Whether you've been avoiding pattern instructions or you're ready to go deeper β€” this is the class that will change how you approach your loom!

🌟 Meet Local Cloth Vendor Betty Ann Winters!

🌿 Betty Ann is a fiber artist working primarily in Nuno felting β€” at times weaving in stitching, weaving (literally), and snippets of vintage linens, ribbons, and fabrics cut from thrifted clothing.

πŸƒ Her work is rooted in the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-sabi β€” finding beauty in imperfection. That permission to play, make mistakes, experiment, and fully relax into the work shows up in every piece she brings to the Shop.

✨ Why we love having Betty Ann here: her inspiration comes straight from the gardens and woods around her home and studio in the foothills of the North Carolina mountains β€” which means every piece carries a little bit of the WNC landscape with it.

πŸ›οΈ Stop by the Shop any day from 11am to 5pm and find Betty Ann's work!

πŸ₯° All purchases from our Retail Shop go to both the fiber artists and farmers (who handcrafted the item or raised the animals that produced the fiber sold) and the work of Local Cloth β€” enabling us to continue providing programming and events that support our local fiber economy.

πŸ›οΈ Local. 🧢 Handmade. ❀️ One-of-a-Kind.

πŸ₯° These smiles say it all! Two shoppers stopped into the Local Cloth Retail Shop this week wearing pieces made right here β€” by artists whose work fills our shelves.

πŸŽ‰ And our Retail Shop is now home to 60 vendors!

πŸ‘ Sixty makers. Sixty stories. Sixty pairs of hands turning fiber into something you can wear, wrap up in, or hang on your wall!
