Avenues of Service

For years, Rotary’s commitment to Service Above Self has been channeled through the Avenues of Service, which form the foundation of club activity.

•Our Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of our group.

•We undertake a wide range of community service projects to improve life in this community.

• We participate in Rotary In

ternational Service actions taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace. Rotarians can support International Service by sponsoring a project in another country, seeking international project partners to support projects in their own communities, or by personally volunteering at an international project site.

•We recognize and encourage the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities as RYLA , Rotaract and Interact, service projects, and creating international understanding with Rotary Youth Exchange . The Four-Way Test
The test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, guides our conduct and decisions. It asks the following questions:

Of the things we think, say or do

1.Is it the TRUTH?
2.Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3.Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4.Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? Mission
The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. Diversity and Rotary
Rotary International recognizes the value of diversity within individual clubs. Rotary encourages assessing those in our communities who are eligible for membership, under existing membership guidelines, and to endeavor to include the appropriate range of individuals. Reflecting the community with regard to professional and business classification, gender, age, religion, and ethnicity is key to the future.

Our Rotary Club sponsors the Student and Teacher of the Month awards at Enka H.S. Today, President Wayne and President Elect Jane met all the honorees at the school's Media Center. The students selected to be honored are not the valedictorian, prom queen or star quarterback -- rather, they are "under the radar" students who still do much for their school. The same is true of the teachers who receive the honor. Our club also co-sponsors, along with the Asheville Rotary Club, a very active and engaged Interact club at Enka H.S., and we were pleased to learn of the many service projects those students have done this year.

Also at this meeting, an Epic Award was presented to Public Image Chair Pat Baker; the Super Rotary Supporter Award was presented to Deerfield server Sandra Griffin; new member Hughes Roberts was introduced and Rotarian Chris Alstrin gave his get-acquainted talk.

At our May 4 meeting, Beth and Dana (“the Punks”), co-owners of Butter Punk in Asheville’s River Arts District, shared their personal origin stories.
The stories were about food, their partnership history, the birth of their biscuit-and-gravy concept, the process of securing their Depot Street space, the severe impact of Helene’s flooding on their build-out, and their community-supported recovery to opening. Rotarians were encouraged to visit Butter Punk on Depot Street in the River Arts District.

At our April 20 meeting, children's literacy volunteers shared their experiences.
Carol Falendar, Deerfield resident and literacy volunteer, delivered an engaging program explaining volunteering at Johnston Elementary School in West Asheville. The volunteers focus on improving K–4 reading through in-class support, working closely with teachers. Carol explained the literacy problem and described Johnson’s student profile and needs. She described instructional methods and observed impact on students, including examples and stories from experience. Carol expressed appreciation for Asheville Biltmore Rotary's dictionary donation to each Johnson third- and fourth-grader. She urged Rotarians to think about volunteering: "Maybe me."

Following Carol, Rotarian Judy Domer shared her experiences as a volunteer. She spoke to the joy of witnessing student improvement and how manageable service can be. Especially needed are more men to provide connections with boys who come from families traditionally led by fathers.

By a coincidence of the calendar, not one but two service projects occurred on the same day this week. Thursday morning and early afternoon, Asheville-Biltmore Rotarians volunteered at the semi-annual Red Cross Blood Drive co-sponsored by our club and our host site, Deerfield Retirement Community. Later that afternoon, several Rotarians volunteered at Transformation Village, setting up furniture and equipment for an educational program at which our Club President Wayne served as emcee.
