Every year, Dr. Billy Earl Dade Middle School in Dallas, Texas, hosts a “Breakfast with Dads” event to strengthen the bond between fathers, father figures, and their students—many of whom come from challenging backgrounds.
This year, some students were unable to sign up for the breakfast as they had no father or father figure to invite. Principal Tracie Washington was concerned about this. Kristina Dove, who helped organize the event, came up with the idea to ask for volunteer "dads" through Facebook. Her post aimed to find 50 men but quickly went viral, attracting 600 volunteers.
Among the volunteers was Archie Nettles, a motivational speaker and Army veteran, who felt it was essential to step in for boys without a father or mentor. When the students walked into the auditorium and saw all the men, they were overwhelmed with excitement and eager to interact.
During the breakfast, one activity had the men teaching the boys how to tie a necktie, setting an uplifting tone for the day. Afterward, one student shared his gratitude, saying he was thrilled to have gained a mentor.
Now, Dove and her coworker are working on keeping the men involved in local community initiatives, hoping to inspire similar efforts in other cities. Their mission is clear: to show children in South Dallas that they are cared for and that their circumstances don’t define their future.
