Hey folks... We are writing to ask for your help. For anyone who knows us, you know how much urban forests and wild lands have been a part of our life and part of the ethos of how we build community. We grew up deeply connected to the seasons and cycles of the woods by our childhood home, and nourished by the walking neighborhoods that provided us a life outdoors and on foot. This was an incredibly valuable way to be raised and one we want to continue to cultivate.

NOW our Rising Appalachia headquarters are in threat of loosing a beautiful 45 acre forested lot nearby! This urban forest quite literally sustained our entire family during the tragic 4 weeks of Hurricane Helene, so that we were able to show up and support those hit harder than us... and has been a bedrock of beauty, creative uplift, endless wildlife, deep calm, and so much more for many, many years. It has been an urban forest so deeply nourishing to us, our band, our community, and endless friends and neighbors. It is a home to endless wildlife that roam freely between here and the deeper wilderness that the Blue Ridge Parkway provides, and it is a micro-climate for fox, bear, deer, hawks and owls, fresh air, cool winds, and deep respite. It is privately owned by UNCA, and we are unclear what is being planned here, but there has been alot of new activity in the forest. A facebook group and petition are below for more inquiry. We are hoping that this forest can be turned into a protected forest for the unforeseen future and not at risk of any development at all.

We could go on for ever about this, how important we think it is for our cities to have veins of wildlife and wild forests running through them, how necessary it is to have walking access for folks near public schools and libraries and towns. How important our universities can be as beacons of community care and land protection.
How unbelievably touched we are to find bears and foxes and deer and owls paying visits when we sit on the back porch and work on new music, or write letters, or gather with friends.

But here, on a Sunday morning, we simply write to solicit your help.

We don't know how much we can do as concerned citizens, or what exactly has been planned so far, but we have hope that forest can be protected...(AND we also know there is quite A LOT to be a concerned citizen about right now, alas).
So, if you have a moment, PLEASE consider calling and sending a letter to UNCA to halt all plans and to make this 45 acre forest a protected zone.
(side note, there is another UNCA lot in the neighborhood was deforested several years ago that effected many of our neighbors. It has been left empty and unused for many years. Perhaps if there is a need to parcel off and use new land, the university should focus its efforts on that lot)
