We provide lodging and supportive services in a "home like" environment, free of charge, for patients and their caregivers coming into Asheville, NC for medical treatment. QUICK FACTS

* Since 1994, The Rathbun Center has provided lodging to over 20,000 families.
* Average occupancy is 94%.
* Average length of stay is 6 nights.
* Guests have been from 45 different states and 5 different countries.
* 70% of guests are from Western North Carolina counties.
* 100 volunteers donate over 6,500 hours per year to the operation of the Rathbun Center.
* Elevators available in the residential wing and in the children's wing.
* Laundry area with washer, dryer, iron, and detergent provided on each floor.
* Day rooms with recliners and half baths on main floor.
* Showers on main floor for day room guest use.
* Kitchen with refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, storage space and pantry available.
* Sitting area with TVs, VCRs, games and movies available in dining room, library and on each residential floor.
* Walking trails, gazebo and playground available outside for guests.
* Play room on bottom floor of residential wing with slides, toys and books for children.
* Library with books, magazines, and Internet access available. Also wireless Internet.
* Friendly and supportive volunteers and staff on hand to provide assistance and to make the stay as comfortable and relaxing as possible in a "home-like" atmosphere.

Mother’s Day is never just about one kind of “Mama" 🐻

This week-we are celebrating the incredible women who walk through our doors in every season of life-mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, godmothers, aunts, caregivers, NICU moms spending sleepless nights beside tiny miracles, women missing their babies, women becoming mothers for the very first time, and those who simply nurture others with the purest kind of love.

Our common areas are blooming with flowers, cupcakes, sweet treats, personalized gift bags, cookies, and even ice cream for anyone needing a little comfort after a long hospital day.

To every woman who has loved, nurtured, prayed over, protected, encouraged, or carried someone else through life — We Thank and Honor You.

Every donated snack, every handmade item, every volunteer hour, every prayer-every shared post helps us continue moments exactly like this for families facing some of life’s hardest days.

My name is Lakell Douglas, and I am the Volunteer Coordinator at Rathbun House. I’ve been part of the Rathbun House team since October 2025, working closely with our volunteers, front desk operations, and guests to help ensure everyone who walks through our doors feels welcomed, supported, and cared for.

🌼 New Volunteer Welcome & Highlights

This month, we are excited to welcome Christina, JaneAnne, and Glen to our volunteer team!
JaneAnne joined us in February 2026 and comes to Rathbun House with a background as an Academic Counselor/Advisor in Psychology. She previously volunteered in elementary schools and consistently shows care, loyalty, and compassion to everyone she meets—even during difficult times. JaneAnne has stepped into a vital Front Desk Volunteer role, helping answer phones, assist with referrals, keep welcoming gifts stocked, and ensure guests, staff, and visitors feel supported from the moment they arrive. Her positive energy, reliability, and willingness to step in at the last minute truly strengthen our mission. You can often find JaneAnne at the front desk on Mondays and Thursdays, and we are deeply grateful for her dedication.

Glen McCandless also joined us in February 2026 and has already made a meaningful impact through music. Glen has shared his incredible musical talents during our Lunch & Learn sessions, bringing uplifting gospel music, comfort, and encouragement to both guests and staff. He is active in music ministry throughout Asheville, NC, and his gift and heart for service make him a wonderful addition to the Rathbun House family. Please be sure to show Glen some love when you see him!

Christina joined us in February 2026 and supports our guests behind the scenes by helping clean rooms, creating safe, welcoming, and comfortable spaces for families during difficult times. In addition, Christina and Izzy helped select and place flowers around the house, adding beautiful touches that helped prepare Rathbun House for the spring and summer seasons. Their care and creativity truly brighten our outdoor spaces.

We would also like to recognize and thank our long‑time volunteers—
Martha, Fran, Noreen, Katrice, Keri B., Rebecca, Izzy, and Juan & Crew.

Their continued dedication is felt throughout the entire house. From working the front desk and organizing paperwork to helping wherever there is a need, their commitment and teamwork help keep Rathbun House running smoothly each day. A special thank‑you to Izzy as well for her help preparing for our Lunch & Learn events.

It’s stones from our own property, handpicked and turned into meaningful pieces of art.

It’s handmade quilts, stitched with love, wrapping families in comfort after long, emotional days.

It’s the sweet sounds of "Groovin’ with Glen"-bringing joy right when it’s needed most.

It’s a warm, home-cooked meal waiting after hours spent at the hospital… a quiet reminder that someone cares.

And sometimes, it’s a simple handwritten card from future medical professionals who once stayed here (who will now give back full circle)

This is what happens when guests, volunteers, and staff come together.
Not just to help… but to truly care for one another.

From our house 🏠

As we gently close out the holidays and step into 2026-we are holding so much gratitude.

Our season was filled with twinkling lights on our tree (thanks Linda and Anthony) warm meals brought in by Lyndsey quiet prayers from Lakell and Harry and moments of joy from our volunteers and coordinator, Fernando.

Incredible NICU dad Charles chose to share photos of himself with his beautiful baby boy, Ezra and a reminder that even in the hardest chapters, love is doing powerful work.

None of this happens without community.
We are deeply thankful for the WNC Bridge Foundation, our donors, volunteers and every person who believes in keeping our doors open — for the thousands of stories, nights, tears, prayers, and victories that pass through them each year.

“The Rathbun House is an amazing place to stay when you have a loved one at Mission Hospital in Asheville. Everyone working there is so kind and compassionate and they genuinely take care of their guests. The rooms are very comfortable and so much nicer than going to a hotel. It’s a 3 minute drive to the hospital, so it’s very convenient, too. I recently spent 6 nights here and was so grateful to be able to come back to such a warm, inviting place. This Veterans Day, Rathbun House honors all the brave men and women who have served and to the families who stood beside them.
Many of our past guests, employees, and volunteers have served our country with unwavering dedication.

Because of their service, we enjoy freedoms that allow us to open our doors every day to families walking through some of their hardest moments. We are grateful to provide a place of rest, warmth, and hope while their loved ones receive the medical care they need.
