We proudly celebrate our sister Mrs. Rita Waters for being featured by WLOS in their Amazing America 250 series highlighting the legacy of Stephens-Lee High School — Asheville’s beloved “Castle on the Hill.” 💕💚

Stephens-Lee was far more than a school. During segregation, it stood as the center of Black excellence in Asheville, educating generations of students who would become teachers, doctors, business leaders, artists, clergy, and community advocates. The school fostered pride, leadership, scholarship, and resilience, serving as a hub for culture, athletics, music, and civic engagement when opportunities elsewhere were limited. Its graduates went on to help shape Asheville’s progress toward equity and opportunity, leaving a legacy that still impacts our community today.

Many members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® were proud students and educators at Stephens-Lee, carrying forward the values of scholarship, service, and sisterhood both inside and outside the classroom. Their commitment to education and community uplift reflects the powerful pipeline of leadership that Stephens-Lee helped create.

As president of the Stephens-Lee Alumni Association, Mrs. Rita Waters continues to preserve and share this vital history so future generations understand the strength, excellence, and unity that grew from the Castle on the Hill.

Congratulations, Mrs. Rita Waters! Your leadership honors the past while inspiring the future. đź’—đź’š

Honoring a Trailblazer: E. Thelma Caldwell

Today, Gamma Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. proudly honors the life, legacy, and enduring impact of our beloved Sister, E. Thelma Caldwell—a woman whose courage and leadership helped reshape Asheville’s history and advance racial justice for generations to come.

In the 1960s, during a time when segregation was deeply entrenched, Thelma Caldwell played a pivotal role in the integration of the Asheville YWCA. She led with quiet strength and strategic brilliance to dismantle the “separate but equal” system that divided Black and white branches, helping to unify the organization and expand access, opportunity, and dignity for all women.

🌿 A Legacy of Firsts and Fearless Leadership
• In 1961, she came to Asheville as Director of the Phyllis Wheatley Branch of the YWCA.
• She later became the first Black Executive Director of the Asheville YWCA—and notably, the first Black woman in the South to lead a YWCA as executive director.
• Under her leadership, the Asheville YWCA became a national example of inclusive governance, integrated programming, and courageous community leadership.
• Her work extended beyond Asheville through national and international service focused on women’s empowerment, racial justice, and human dignity.
đź’— Sisterhood & Service
In addition to her civil rights legacy, Thelma Caldwell was a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Gamma Gamma Omega Chapter. She exemplified our sorority’s mission of Service to All Mankind, living out the values of leadership, scholarship, advocacy, and sisterhood every day of her life.
🕊️ Though she transitioned in 2004, her legacy lives on—in the institutions she transformed, the doors she opened, and the lives she touched. Sister Caldwell reminds us that true leadership does not always seek the spotlight, but it always leaves a lasting imprint.
We honor her by continuing the work:
✨ Building inclusive communities
✨ Advocating for justice
✨ Leading with courage and compassion
With gratitude and pride,
Gamma Gamma Omega Chapter đź’•đź’š

On this day, we did more than step pretty.. We made a FIRST move that secured the legacy.

On January 29, 1913, led by the visionary and fearless Nellie M. Quander, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® became officially incorporated and protected. Sister Nellie’s leadership ensured that what our Founders built would not only last, but be preserved with intention, structure, and foresight.

This was legacy protection in real time. This was a woman seeing ahead, standing on business, and safeguarding the future of our sisterhood.

113 years later, we are still benefiting from that bold decision, built on Principle, Preservation, and Perpetuity.

Happy Incorporation Day, Sisters!đź©·đź’š
