Join us for our first section meeting of the year with RiverLink at Trinity Episcopal Church on January 28th, from 11:50am - 1:00pm.

Description: For decades, Asheville’s River Arts District (RAD) was a nationally recognized creative hub, home to more than 700 artists and a major economic engine for the region. That same proximity to the French Broad River proved devastating when Hurricane Helene caused catastrophic flooding in September 2024, destroying an estimated 80% of the district. In response, the RAD community united around recovery rooted in creativity and long-term resilience, including the formation of Unified RAD. With generous support from the global online marketplace Etsy, RiverLink and Unified RAD led a Resilience Visioning + Planning effort, selecting Sasaki as the design firm to guide the work. Through professionally facilitated charrettes and surveys involving artists, business and property owners, residents, visitors, City of Asheville representatives, planners, designers, and river experts, the process produced a shared, actionable vision for a more flood-resilient RAD. The effort identified 39 innovative public, public–private, and private catalyst projects to support the district’s economic recovery. Please join Lisa Raleigh and Joe Balcken to learn more about this work and the next steps in the RAD’s recovery journey.
