Impact Health

Impact Health Impact Health is a nonprofit formed to manage and oversee the NC Healthy Opportunities Pilot across Western North Carolina.

The Healthy Opportunities Pilot (HOP) is an innovative new approach to supporting the upstream social determinants of health and reducing the need for clinical interventions by using Medicaid dollars to pay for services related to transportation, nutrition, housing, and interpersonal safety.

In a new STAT article, former NCDHHS Secretaries Mandy Cohen and Kody Kinsley reflect on the impact of HOP, including findings that the program saved Medicaid an average of $164 per participant per month while helping to address barriers such as food insecurity, housing instability, and transportation.

HOP has shown what can happen when healthcare and community-based organizations work together to address the factors that shape our health beyond the doctor's office.

We're proud to be part of this innovative work and encouraged to see North Carolina's experience contributing to a national conversation about what the future of healthcare can look like.

“North Carolina proved that pragmatism can beat partisanship,” write Mandy Cohen and Kody Kinsley.

There’s a lot we can learn from Dolly Parton about caring for our communities. ❤️

Her Appalachian roots have shaped not only her music but also her commitment to giving back and creating opportunities for people in the communities she calls home. From the Imagination Library to her support for education, literacy, disaster recovery, and families across Appalachia, Dolly has shown us what can happen when we invest in people and believe in the strength of our communities.

In rural health, we see that same spirit every day. The lesson is simple, but powerful: when we invest in our communities, we invest in the health and future of the people who call them home.

And as Dolly reminds us, you never have to forget where you came from to make a difference far beyond it. We hope we honor Dolly's spirit and passion every day we serve our community.
