Being a young black girl in today’s society is difficult. As a society, we need to be better. It starts with representation, and Heart Flies Open by our dear friend Omileye Achikeobi-Lewis is that representation! There’s something so important and vital about being able to take up space in a world that is built for you.

Written and illustrated by Omileye Achikeobi-Lewis, My Heart Flies Open is an inclusive, empowering, and uplifting picture book for girls of color about yoga, meditation, and coming home to self-love....

Do you feel like you are stuck in freeze mode? The freeze state is a defence mechanism, so at one time its purpose was to keep you safe. Make a list of how it has kept you safe. For example, standing up for yourself may not have been safe for you when you were a child. While freeze mode once kept you out of harm’s way, chances are it’s no longer serving you. Let’s say that you were raised in an environment where you felt unsafe to speak up. How has that experience impacted your life? Do you feel confident to stand up for yourself and fight for what you want? Are you willing to state your needs to others? Do you feel anxious and shy away from attention? Look at your life now: where and how are you still living in a state of freeze?

Breaking the silence on mental health!

Today is World Mental Health Day, and it comes at a time when our daily lives have changed considerably as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the increased awareness of mental health wellbeing and the reduction of stigma against people who live with a mental illness, it is still difficult to be open about what it is like to live with a mental illness. Brain disorders have a stigma that other illnesses do not have and yet there is no health without mental health.

Our mental health is essential to our overall well-being and as important as physical health. Stigma and shame are also compounded by the lack of access to preventive care and treatment. As our understanding of mental health grows, we grow along with it. When we feel mentally well, we can work productively, enjoy our free time, and contribute actively to our communities.

What can you do? Here are some suggestions: Reach out to someone you know who is living with mental illness. Give them your support. Be a friend. Stand up when other people speak about those with mental illness in derogatory terms. Write your media outlets for a more balanced portrayal of people with mental illness. Demand that your primary care physician do mental health assessments as part of their well-care visits.

And if you feel you may be experiencing symptoms or at risk of mental illness, see your medical practitioner as soon as possible to take the steps necessary to get and stay healthy, because there is no health without mental health. We're in this together. You're not alone; talk to someone you trust. Sharing a problem is often the first step to recovery.
