“I’m just so glad that Dr. Bessey’s here with us.”

Those are the words of Janice, an 88-year-old living in rural Western North Carolina. Without a local provider, Janice would have to travel more than an hour for even a routine appointment.

Thankfully, Janice receives her care close to home from Caroline Bessey, MD, a MAHEC graduate and Rural Fellow practicing in Clay County. Dr. Bessey is just one of 318 MAHEC-trained providers serving communities across Western North Carolina--all physicians who choose to stay, lead, and care for patients who might otherwise go without.

For patients like Janice, a physician nearby means more than convenience. It means peace of mind that comes with knowing she’ll be seen and cared for, right where she lives.

You can help ensure that same peace of mind for our friends, families, and neighbors. Your gift to MAHEC helps bring compassionate care to rural communities so patients like Janice get the medical services they need, close to home.

Donate by June 30 to help us reach our fiscal year goal! Visit mahec.net/donate to make a gift online. On behalf of Janice and others like her--thank you for your generous support.

Mental Health Awareness Month: More Good Days, Together 💙

This Wellness Wednesday, a few small reminders that can make a big difference:

✨ Affirmations matter.
The words you say to yourself can help ground you in what matters most—reminding you of your strength and helping you feel calm and confident.

✨ Helping others helps you, too.
Whether it’s supporting a friend, volunteering, or giving back, acts of kindness can boost your mood and promote emotional well-being.

✨ You’re not alone.
If having more good days feels difficult, support is available. Talk to your MAHEC provider—we’re here for you.

The year after giving birth is a high-risk period. Dismissing symptoms as "normal" can be deadly. A severe headache might seem like exhaustion, but it could mean dangerously high blood pressure or postpartum preeclampsia.

If you're postpartum and experiencing a severe headache with vision changes, call your doctor now.

If you were given a teal "I GAVE BIRTH' bracelet after giving birth, wear it so medical professionals know your symptoms are significant.

Share so others recognize what the teal bracelet means.
-----------
