Children First CIS of Buncombe County

Children First CIS of Buncombe County Children First/Communities In Schools believes that every child deserves to reach their full potential.

We work to make sure students have the resources they need to succeed in school and we empower the community to be advocates for families. We provide direct services to children in five local schools, including Student Support Specialists in schools, after school enrichment at our Learning Centers, and summer programming. We support children and families with our Family Resource Centers including

food pantries, school supplies, and emergency financial assistance. We also mobilize advocates on family-friendly policies at the local, state, and federal levels. Our Project POWER AmeriCorps team members increase the capacity of local nonprofits and school partners by providing a year of service to support the community.

Huge thank you to for hosting our Oakley Garden Club last week! 🌱🐞

Students spent the afternoon exploring the gardens, hunting for bugs, asking questions, and discovering some new critters along the way. Always a good day when students get to learn outside and experience hands-on discovery together. Thanks again to Root Cause Farm for having us!

Afterschool is where students are supported in real, everyday ways. It’s the daily work of showing up for students and being someone they can rely on.
Across the U.S., about 10 million kids are in afterschool programs each year, supported by over 850,000 people doing this work.
Every afterschool professional plays a part in that. Take the time to thank them today.
A big shoutout to everyone who shows up for our students after the bell rings, in front of the camera and behind the scenes. You make this work possible 💛

Thank you to the folks who make this work possible:

Yesterday at Johnston Elementary, Alvena’ led “Spilling the Tea,” bringing caregivers together to connect and learn more about social-emotional learning.

It was a welcoming space to share experiences, ask questions, and support one another, all part of how we show up for families and build community together. 💜☕🫖
