Congratulations to retired Navy Captain Royce Williams, an Eagle Scout and naval aviator, who received the Medal of Honor last night during the State of the Union address in recognition of his extraordinary heroism during the Korean War. In a 1952 air battle, Williams shot down four Russian MiG-15s in a 35-minute dogfight, an achievement unmatched at the time and still rare in the jet age. The engagement remained classified for decades, and Williams did not speak publicly about it until records were later declassified.

President Trump had informed Williams in advance by phone that he would receive the nation’s highest military honor. Now more than 100 years old, Williams expressed deep gratitude as the medal was presented during the annual address to Congress.

Legislation included in the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act removed the statutory time limits that had previously prevented the award, clearing the way for the president to bestow the Medal of Honor during Williams’ lifetime.

A Scout is Brave. A Scout is Trustworthy. A Scout is Royce Williams.

Great news for Scouts and leaders! 🎉

Merit badge pamphlets are getting a modern upgrade.

Instead of printed requirement lists, each pamphlet will now include a QR code and URL that link directly to the latest requirements in the Merit Badge Hub on scouting.org. That means you will always have the most current information and resources right at your fingertips. 📲

Here is what to expect:

🆓 QR codes are now being added to free downloadable pamphlets
🏬 Newly printed pamphlets with QR codes will begin appearing in Scout Shops in 2026
🔄 Updates will continue as pamphlets are revised and reprinted over the next several years

Why the change?

🛠 Merit badge requirements are regularly reviewed and updated to stay current with technology, best practices, and current events.
📅 While many updates take effect each year on January 1, safety related changes can happen at any time.
✅ This new approach keeps the in-depth content and inspiration in the pamphlet aligned with the most up-to-date requirements, whether you are using a downloaded PDF or a printed copy.

A smart step forward to keep Scouting current, accurate, and accessible for everyone. 🧭

CNN covered the launch of two of Scouting America's newest merit badges -- Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity Merit Badges. 🧠💻

A merit badge in Scouting is an award for mastering skills in over 135 subjects, from traditional camping and first aid to science, trades, and careers, helping Scouts explore interests, learn life skills, and advance in rank, including the Eagle Scout rank. Earned by completing requirements with a counselor, these patches represent proficiency and are worn on a sash with the uniform. ⚜️

Scouting America, the organization formerly known as the Boy Scouts, is giving scouts the chance to earn two new merit badges: one in artificial intelligence and another in cybersecurity.

"On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and country,
and to obey the Scout Law,
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.”

A group of T1154 Scouts working on the Citizenship of the Community merit badge attended a recent county Board of Supervisors meeting. The Scouts met with the BOS members Supervisor Sylvia Glass & Chair At-Large Phyllis Randall and were able to listen to local issues such as the Oak Hill Farm 🏡 (Former home of 5th President James Monroe) preservation as a state park and an Algonkian Traffic Signal 🛑 work.

Events like this help the scouts meet requirements for the Eagle-required Citizenship of the Community merit badge and teaches Scouts to be engaged, active citizens. 🇺🇸

Special Thanks to Mr. Kent Erwin, Ms. Sylvia Glass and Ms. Randall for taking time to meet with Scouts and answer questions.

Sharing this post from Three Rivers District, NNJC ⚜️:

Over a century ago, America faced a “boy problem.” Industrialization, immigration, and inequality left many boys adrift—skipping school, getting into trouble, and lacking strong role models.

America’s “boy problem” was met with a wave of civic innovation—the founding of the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, and other youth programs. These groups succeeded because they gave boys purpose, skills, and positive male role models, often through outdoor adventure, teamwork, and service.

Today, we face a similar crisis. Many young men are lonely, disconnected, and disengaged from school, work, and community life. Male mentors are in short supply, and many youth-serving organizations now serve more girls than boys. Without guidance, boys are more vulnerable to harmful influences—especially online.

The lesson from history is clear: mentorship works. Scouts thrive when they have leaders—especially men—who model values, teach skills, and guide them toward maturity. The outdoors is still one of the most powerful settings for building confidence, resilience, and character.

As Scout leaders, we are on the front line of the solution. Every campout, hike, and service project is an opportunity to connect a young person to a healthy community, a caring mentor, and a positive vision of manhood. Just as in 1910, the call is for adults—especially men—to step up and lead the next generation.

Three weeks ago today a group of our scouts and scouters departed for an unforgettable high adventure at Northern Tier – Atikokan, Ontario.

The 18 individuals split into two crews and planned their routes. For over a week, crews paddled through the pristine lakes of Canada, navigating miles of backcountry by canoe, foot, and sheer determination. They:

🛶 Canoed across crystal-clear waters
🥾 Hiked rugged trails and portaged heavy canoes through dense forest
🍳 Cooked their meals over open fires
⛈️ Faced heavy storms and braved large waves the first couple of days
🎣 Tried their luck at fishing - successfully catching and cooking several Northern pike and smallmouth bass
⛺ Camped under the stars with loons calling in the distance
⚜️Made memories of a lifetime

They faced challenges that tested their endurance, teamwork, and wilderness skills — and came back stronger, more confident, and full of incredible stories.

Huge thanks to the staff at Northern Tier and all the volunteers who made this trip possible. This was scouting at its finest: adventure, growth, and lifelong memories forged in the great outdoors. 🌲🛶⛺️

A look back at our week at summer camp 👀

Camp Marriott

New Scouts, most experiencing their first week of summer camp, had fun learning the foundational skills needed for beginner ranks and earned some of their first merit badges, such as Swimming and Astronomy. 🏊 🔭

Older Scouts, whether returning for their second or sixth year of summr camp, dove into a range of both Eagle-required and elective merit badges from Cooking to Citizenship in the World and Automotive Maintenance to Woodworking. 🍳 🌎 🚗 🪵

Adult scouters made the most of their time, earning certification in First Aid/CPR, Intro to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLST), Safe Afloat, and Safe Swim Defense, as well as completing Scoutmaster/Assistant SM position training. ✅

What was the best part of the week? Some say it was delicious camp food, others appreciated the stellar views, still others raved about the camp staff. At the end of the week, after the final silly skit and last crackle of the bonfire, everyone enjoyed the genuine camaraderie and amazing memories made. 🎭 🔥 ⚜️
