Good Shepherd of Northern Virginia

Call Directions Website

Good Shepherd of Northern Virginia The Good Shepherd came into existence in 1983 when a pastor—Charlie Grant—began taking homeless people into his own home.

Good Shepherd of Northern Virginia is a nonprofit organization providing help for the homeless & those in need through emergency housing & prevention services leading to self reliance. His work led to the creation of the area’s first organized homeless shelter, called Loudoun County Emergency Housing Alliance. This predecessor to Good Shepherd of Northern Virginia began raising funds to house the homeless for a short time at a local motel. Area developers then became involved, allowing use of vacant residences in the spirit of mutual responsibility in addressing homelessness. Over the years, Good Shepherd grew, obtaining property, growing its distinguished Board of Directors, hiring professional staff, and establishing solid, coordinated programs to address not only housing, but the problems that cause and surround homelessness. Today, with the capacity to serve the community like never before, Good Shepherd operates an emergency shelter; 6 transitional homes for single women, single mothers and families, retail thrift stores in Ashburn, Sterling and Leesburg; and a small food pantry. In addition to providing much-needed shelter, Good Shepherd has expanded its services to make a goal-oriented, intensive case management approach to self-sufficiency available to all our housing residents and to provide outreach programs to assist families in need through our food pantry, counseling and case management services, and thrift store voucher program.

What makes a great mentor? Tell us below 👇

At Good Shepherd of Northern Virginia, our Peer Mentorship Program pairs current participants with people who've walked the same path — former participants who turned their struggles into strength.

There's nothing quite like guidance from someone who truly gets it. That shared experience builds trust, hope, and real momentum toward self-sufficiency.

In 1983, Pastor Charlie Grant saw a growing need right here in Loudoun and opened his own home to neighbors without one. That's how Good Shepherd was born — rooted in this community because this community needed it. Today we operate immediate needs shelters, transitional homes, and thrift stores across Ashburn, Sterling, Leesburg, and Chantilly.

What's the most powerful act of kindness you've ever witnessed? 👇

In 1983, Pastor Charlie Grant did something simple but extraordinary — he opened his own home to the homeless. That act of compassion became Good Shepherd of Northern Virginia, the region's first organized homeless shelter. Over 40 years later, we're still opening doors for women, children, and families.

Why do you think structure and accountability matter on the road to self-sufficiency? We'd love to hear your perspective.

At Good Shepherd, it's not about restriction — it's about creating a safe and stable foundation from which participants have the chance to rebuild. When you're working toward housing, employment, and independence, a clear mind and structured environment make all the difference.

With goal setting, personal accountability, and wraparound support, this model has helped more than 80% of our participants move toward self-sufficiency.
