(Long post ahead on contest season)
As contests continue across the country, I’ve been taking time to reflect on the mindsets that shaped the way I competed — and the way I still judge contests throughout the country to this day. I want to share these thoughts with future titleholders, those preparing to step on a stage. I also invite current and former titleholders to add their own reflections.
1 — Compete with, not against.
No matter how driven you are, remember that your class is not your enemy. The more you treat fellow competitors as obstacles, the less of your true self you offer the judges and the audience. The real reward is the community you build — the friendships and chosen family that stay with you long after the lights go down.
2 — Let yourself be honest in interviews.
Show up open. Show up vulnerable. Don’t shrink your feelings or apologize for what comes up. This experience is meant to stretch you, and honesty is what allows you to be seen.
3 — Stay humble.
“Today’s peacock may be tomorrow’s feather duster.” No one on that stage is above anyone else. You each bring something unique to the table, and everyone starts somewhere.
4 — You’re not expected to know everything.
If a judge asks something you don’t know, it’s perfectly fine to say, “I don’t have that answer right now, but I can find it and circle back.” What matters is your integrity — and your follow‑through.
5 — What you do after the contest matters.
Whatever the outcome, remember: if you plan to return, your actions the moment you step off that stage count. If you told the judges and the audience what you’d do with your title year, do it anyway. Your word is part of your legacy.
Wherever you are in your journey — first‑time competitor or seasoned titleholder — I hope you carry these reminders with you. Step onto that stage knowing you’ve done the work, knowing you belong there, and knowing that your voice, your story, and your presence matter. Trust yourself. Lead with heart. Let your integrity speak louder than any spotlight.
I’m rooting for every one of you. May you walk in with clarity, walk out with pride, and may the experience shape you in ways that stay with you long after the sash is placed. Wishing you courage, connection, and the very best of luck. Go shine.
