We saw a new bird while we were on the birdwalk on Saturday. It was determined to be a Sage Sparrow. There are 2 races of the sage sparrow, the belli which is a costal bird and the navadensis, an interior bird. The bird we saw was an intermediate between the 2 called cancecens. these are all sage sparrows.

We also saw the Horned Owls nesting again on the southeast side of the refuge. We will try to get pictures of the owls and post them.

With bravery and strength they serve,
With dignity and pride they stand,
With courage and hope they fight,
The life they live is dangerous, treacherous, rough, and hard going,
But when the fog clears,
They are the ones who stil stand.

Great job to Marina and all the other contestants this year, your drawings were all stunning and portrayed the ducks beautifully! We hope to see all next year!

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today announced Marina Boiko, a 17-year- old student from Boulder, took top honors once again by winning the “Best of Show” in Colorado at the 2017 Junior Duck Stamp Contest. Marina’s artwork was selected from a record approaching number of amazing entries (677) from across the state. Her acrylic paint rendition of Wood Ducks, entitled “The Golden Hour”, represented Colorado at the National Junior Duck
Stamp Competition in Washington, D.C. in April and won 17th place in the country!

Entries from Colorado were judged by a panel of waterfowl enthusiasts and professional wildlife artists. Recognition for all participants and prizes for the top 25 drawings in each of four age groups (K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12) are awarded each year. This year’s award ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 13 th from 1-3pm at The Arvada Center for The Performing Arts. The Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Program is an educational program designed for all public, private, and home schooled students in grades K-12 to learn more about waterfowl and habitat conservation. Incorporating scientific and wildlife management principles into visual arts curriculum creates an active awareness of the critical need to protect, preserve and enhance our wetland habitat for waterfowl, migratory songbirds, and the hundreds of other plants and animals that depend on wetlands for their survival. The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. We are both a leader and trusted partner in fish and wildlife conservation, known for our scientific excellence, stewardship of lands and natural resources, dedicated professionals, and commitment to public service.
