Lemuel Jones of Bourbon was the first Douglas County man to be killed in WW I. He was the grandson of Malden Jones who laid out the town of Bourbon and was a friend of Abraham Lincoln. He is buried in an American military cemetery in Lorraine, France, but he has a cenotaph in the Bourbon Cemetery.

A recent conversation about the origins of brick streets in Arthur, and their ultimate demise, led to the discovery of these two articles nearly fifty-two years apart. Vine Street was originally bricked in the fall of 1907. In 1936 WPA workers painstakingly flipped and restored all the bricks on Vine Street in an effort to maintain the thoroughfare for future generations. An editorial in a 1958 edition of the graphic (almost too faint to read) posited that the demise of the bricks on Vine Street would be the constant flow of extremely large and heavy gas transport trucks headed south from the USI Chemical Plant west of Tuscola. Almost exactly one year later, in the fall of 1959, all of the bricks on Vine Street were completely covered by asphalt.

NOTICE FOR ARTHUR RESIDENTS OR FORMER RESIDENTS!!!!!! TIME CAPSULE
This note was on the back of our water bills this month. Note there are only a couple of weeks to get your items to the village offices where you will be given an envelope to place your items in. Beginning December 1, 2023, the Village of Arthur will start collecting items for the time capsule that will be reopened in 2073. A 10 X13 envelope will be provided for individuals and organizations to include letters, pictures, newspaper articles, memorabilia, or other items for someone 50 years from now. Bring your items to the Municipal Building during regular business hours. The envelopes will be marked and a list of those depositing envelopes and their future recipients will be recorded. Last chance to include something for the time capsule will be Sunday, December 31, 2023 from 1:00-3:00 PM at the Community Building. A brief time capsule closing ceremony will follow. So don't hesitate to get those items together and take them up to the village offices!
