Celis Rabena, program manager for New Life K9s, and his service dog in training, Calypso, addressed the Arroyo Grande Lions Club at its Wednesday night meeting. New Life K9s trains service dogs, primarily for victims of PTSD. The dogs are primarily labradors because of their personality traits and most trainers are inmates at San Luis Obispo's CMC facility. Dogs live with the inmates during the months long process. The organization has a goal of expanding to rescue dogs and eventually using them to assist first responders based in fire suppression facilities, according to Rabena.

Our Story

Arroyo Grande Lions Club is one of many clubs throughout the world that is organized to make our community better. Our number one project has been vision care dating back to when Helen Keller dubbed the Lions "Knights of the Blind." We recycle used glasses, assist with vision screening for South County children, and conduct a variety of youth projects. This past year, Arroyo Grande Lions contributed $6,000 in student scholarship funds. We also recycled an estimated 5,000 used glasses that are cleaned, sorted and distributed to the needy worldwide.
