Bro. Oliver Loving (b.1812- d.1867), along with his business partner & Masonic Bro. Charles Goodnight (b.1836- d.1929) were cowboys and cattle ranchers in Texas. Together in 1866 they developed the Goodnight-Loving Trail to drive cattle into various markets in many states.

The trail began at Fort Belknap (Texas), traveled through Central Texas, north along the Pecos River and into New Mexico to Fort Sumner. The trail then turned north crossed Colorado to Denver, and eventually extended into Wyoming.

It was on one of these cattle drives while scouting ahead, Loving was injured in an attack by Camanches. Bro. Loving succumbed to his injuries, but not before his partner Bro. Goodnight promised him that upon his death he would es**rt his body back to Texas.

If this story sounds familiar to you its because it was used as the basis for the 1985 movie Lonesome Dove starring Robert Duval.

Loving and Goodnight were members of Phoenix Lodge No. 275 in Weatherford, Texas and were buried with Masonic honors.

History teaches us something important:
Masonry has faced persecution before—from kings, tyrants, and regimes afraid of free-thinking men—and it has endured every time.

📜 This Day in Masonic History — February 13, 1923

On this day in 1923, the Grand Fascist Council in Italy issued its first formal resolution against Freemasonry.

This marked the beginning of open state hostility toward the Craft under the Fascist regime. Lodges were targeted, property was seized, and Masons were forced to choose between their principles and their safety. What followed was suppression, confiscation, and the attempted erasure of a fraternity built on liberty of conscience, moral courage, and brotherhood.

But history teaches us something important:
Masonry has faced persecution before—from kings, tyrants, and regimes afraid of free-thinking men—and it has endured every time.

Because Masonry is not stone buildings or regalia.
It lives in the character of its members, the principles they carry, and the quiet refusal to surrender truth to fear.

This day reminds us why vigilance matters.
Why liberty must be defended.
And why Freemasons are called to stand firm when pressure comes from power.

The tools may be taken. The light never is.

Did You Know? Almost 200 years ago today, Stephen F. Austin (and other Masons) met to to petition for a Lodge Charter.

Did you know that on this day in 1909, Harry S. Truman became a Freemason? He was Initiated an Entered Apprentice in Belton Lodge No. 450, in Belton, Missouri.

Truman's Masonic career is just as impressive as his political one: he was an active member of a wide variety of Masonic orders, and served Missouri Freemasonry as Grand Master from 1940 to 1941. This was just a few short years before he served his country as its 33rd President, from 1945 to 1953.
