On Wednesday, a small group of CCPBA members was invited to assist with the Andrew Molera Controlled Burn in Monterey County. Run by and Monterey State Parks, a goal of this grassland/brush burn overlooking the Big Sur coastline was to help set back non-native Harding grass as well as brush and allow other native bunch grasses and forbs room to establish and grow. As this burn was conducted on land still utilized and tended by the , CCPBA tribal apprentices Chanel (Esselen) and Esak (Amah Mutsun) began the test burn with prayer and a land acknowledgment. Huge thanks to Monterey State Parks and CALFIRE BEU for having us!

‘Tis the (Burn) season! On November 1st, CCPBA members burned the Kelleher Unit at the . Composed of grassland and shrubland fuel types, the hotter, dryer weather helped us target invasive French Broom in order to promote native grassland species. The 2023 Central Coast TREX was the first of its kind! We are so grateful for all of the support we received from all of our partners in our tri-county community, including the Resource Conservation District of Monterey County, CAL FIRE BEU, BurnBot , and more. As mentioned, we had certain odds stacked against us that were not foreign to other fire practitioners throughout the state of California, but establishing a collaborative and educational environment led to getting lots of folks trained, good fire on the ground, and a better understanding of stewardship in the community. Thank you!

Thanks to those that attended the Aromas Home Hardening Workshop! We had a great turnout of Aromas community locals learn about building wildfire-resilient homes and landscapes. Huge thanks to those of you who stayed for the work party to apply learned techniques and help create defensible space around the Brennan home! We loved seeing connections being made. Keep them going and continue the neighborhood collaboration! Many hands make light work.

While we were grateful for receiving hundreds of applications for the 2023 Central Coast CAL-TREX, we were only able to invite 70 burners to join us. Each one brought a specialized skill set to the table and helped make this event possible. Thank you all, so much, and thank your families and loved ones for holding down the fort during the TREX!

In early June, the CCPBA hosted the first Central Coast CAL-TREX (Prescribe Burn Training Exchange)! It was a great week of training, network building, and despite a little rain, putting good fire on the ground with local fire agencies, tribal groups, natural resource managers, and central coast community members. More on the TREX to come!

This November, a group of CCPBA members joined other selected participants from as far as Canada in the first-ever Santa Barbara Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (SB TREX). For a week, we worked with local agencies including Santa Barbara County Fire and the SB Range Improvement Association to put good fire on UCSB’s Sedgwick Reserve and TNC’s Dangermond Preserve. Aside from burning, the week also included fire-related workshops, presentations, a local fire history tour on Bar M Ranch, and more. This week of burning also serviced extensive fire ecology/technology research🔥 Can’t wait for next year!
