When we found out about our 2nd pregnancy, we were overjoyed with excitement. We were having a baby girl. Not long after our announcement, we learned she would be born with Down Syndrome. This was a time of great confusion and fear but also a time where families and friends came together to show love and support. It is amazing to realize that even before Lydia Faith Cox actually came in to this wo
rld she was bringing people together and having an incredible impact on lives. Lydia was born on February 15, 2006. She immediately stole our hearts. A well-visited corner of the NICU was home for 3 long weeks. Over the next 3 years, Lydia faced challenges most never have to endure. Heart surgeries, RSV and Pneumonia were just a few. However, she taught us of her incredible strength through these times. The appreciation we shared as we watched Lydia tackle those simple milestones, such as waving for the first time, was comparable to other families watching a child ride a bike all by themselves. Lydia entered school and quickly showed everyone her intelligence. Perhaps the most monumental moment in her life was her first steps. She had the determination and did not let falling down discourage her. She wanted to play with her brothers and cousins!! When Lydia went for her 2nd heart surgery, no one ever imagined what the outcome would be. Lydia Faith Cox suffered severe complications from the surgery and died on October 25, 2009. The Golf Tournament was originally started by Keith Louis to help with Lydia's medical expenses. She was chosen 2 years in a row. The third year we decided the money should go to an organization, rather than a direct benefit to Lydia, since she had passed away. It was decided her family would start a tax deductible foundation in her honor and donate the procedes from the tournament each year. In 2010, we raised $11,000.00 and donated the money to The Down Syndrome Association of Greater St. Louis to be used for their annual Lose the Training Wheels camp. We hope to do better this year and continue to fund this great camp!! Thank You,
Suzie
