A huge THANK YOU to everyone who joined us to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Penn State Annapolis Alumni Chapter with an unforgettable 90s-themed party! From the music and games, to the laughter and Penn State pride, it was a truly special evening celebrating a chapter that began in 1996.

Special thanks to Jefferson Holland, Class of ‘76, Chesapeake Troubadour & Poet Laureate of Annapolis, for sharing his incredible poetry, stories, and musical performance that perfectly captured the spirit of the Chesapeake and our community.

The AMBER Alert system was created in 1996 following the tragic abduction and murder of a 9-year-old girl in Texas, evolving into a nationwide and international child abduction alert program. The AMBER Alert system is named after Amber Rene Hagerman, who was abducted while riding her bicycle in Arlington, Texas, on January 13, 1996, and found murdered four days later. Her death highlighted the need for a rapid public notification system to help locate abducted children.

The acronym AMBER stands for America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response, created as a backronym to honor her memory and facilitate nationwide awareness. As of late 2025, the AMBER Alert system has successfully helped recover over 1,300 children in the United States. The AMBER Alert model has been adopted internationally, including in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, Malaysia, and the Netherlands. Each country adapted the system to local needs, often renaming it while maintaining the core principle of rapid public notification to aid in child recovery.

Final days to get your tickets to our 30th anniversary party. Let’s keep checking back on 1996 when it all started.

Founded in 1996 by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith, Hotmail 📩 was one of the first free, web-based email services. Conceived to offer email access from any computer, Hotmail was launched on July 4, 1996, with the name stylized as HoTMaiL (highlighting HTML). Hotmail was revolutionary for allowing email access independent of an ISP.

Acquired by Microsoft in 1997 for ~$400 million, it became a cornerstone of MSN. At its peak in 2011, it had 360 million active monthly users and was available in 36 different languages. Hotmail was the first to offer safety innovations like anti-virus scanning for attachments. Hotmail integrated the calendar service, built in a reading pane, and added rules, spell checking, search, and web messenger functionality.

It’s been rebranded through various stages (MSN Hotmail, Windows Live Hotmail) before being replaced by Outlook.com in 2013. While no longer an active brand, the service lives on, with .com email addresses still fully functional within the modern Outlook system though users have the option to convert to .com email addresses.

It’s just two weeks until our 30th anniversary party at The Metropolitan. Get your tickets now!!!! In the meantime, let’s keep looking back at 1996.

The Bryce Jordan Center opened in 1996, marking a significant addition to main campus infrastructure. The BJC is named after Penn State’s 14th President, Henry Bryce Jordan, who served from 1983 until 1990. It took almost three years to build and construction cost $52.762 million (about $108 million today). The 16,500-seat arena is the largest indoor venue in Pennsylvania outside of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

In addition to hosting sporting events and concerts, the BJC includes over 50,000 square feet of meeting space for private events, conferences, and trade shows, with full-service catering and A/V equipment. The arena opened on January 6, 1996 hosting Penn State’s winter commencement ceremonies. The first concert at the BJC was headlined by Rusted Root on January 21, 1996. The event featured two opening acts: the Goo Goo Dolls and The Badlees.
