There are two possible answers to this week's Where's This? Wednesday. The photo is Lake Accotink from the Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail.

Obviously, the CCT was named after the late Gerry Connolly, representative for Virginia's 11th congressional district. 🤔 But how did Lake Accotink get its name?

The name “Accotink” is derived from an Algonquian word meaning “at the end of the hill,” referring to the name of the largest Native American village in the area.

May was a whirlwind of trail work, rides, and advocacy efforts across the region. We're so grateful for this community, which continues to show up, roll up its sleeves, and champion the trails and outdoor spaces we all enjoy.

The momentum continues this month, and we're going all out for National Trails Day on June 6! Be sure to check out the many trail work opportunities, rides, and events happening this weekend, along with the latest trail news and updates in the latest newsletter.

It's time for another "Where's This? Wednesday" - MORE's most inconsistent social media game.

📷 We post a photo and you guess where it was taken. No clues, no prizes, only fleeting internet glory. You get extra glory if you can tell us (without asking the internet) how this place got its name.

Answer will be revealed the following morning at 7.

Exciting news! The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is opening the entire 16 miles of the Seneca Greenway Trail to bikes. Previously, 10 miles of the trail were restricted to hikers only.

This didn’t happen by accident. MORE has been working with DNR for mountain bike access and is investing over $135,000 to ensure necessary upgrades are made over the next year. Majority of this amount is funded through a Maryland Legislative Bond Initiative obtained through the support of the District 15 delegation, with the balance coming from your donations.

Upgrades to Seneca Greenway include:
▪ A new sidewalk connection recently completed under Clopper Road, providing safe road crossing for all trail users.
▪ Replacement of two 40 year-old bridges with new 30-foot wooden bridges.
▪ Trail improvements, including bench cutting and erosion management.
▪ Repairs and upgrades to at least a dozen smaller bridges and boardwalks

MORE is incredibly grateful to DNR, The Izaak Walton League, Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, Maryland Conservation Corps, and the Potomac Bridle & Hiking Trails Association for the work they’re also doing to improve and steward the Seneca Greenway Trail.

Check out a newly opened section in a casual group ride of Seneca Bluffs and Seneca Greenway on Sunday (6/7) at 9AM: x.gldn.io/e/egF6mwSeE3b
