Happy ! Across the country, Trout Unlimited works with local partners and U.S. Forest Service to ensure trails are accessible and safe.

On Washington State's Mount Baker - Snoqualmie National Forest, TU and our partners are are improving and maintaining Snoquera trails, connecting that existing network to the Pacific Crest Trail, and improving camping opportunities. This work engages a wide range of communities, and benefits anglers, hunters, hikers, bikers and ATV users on public lands near Tacoma and Seattle (photo: )

On Alaska's Tongass National Forest, TU replaced a failing culvert that was blocking fish passage to upstream spawning habitat and washing out a nearby trailhead parking lot during high flows. The culvert is on a tributary of Situk River, which hosts the state’s largest run of steelhead and is a popular angling destination.

In the George Washington/Jefferson National Forest, TU replaced a failed culvert on Furnace Branch, a small stream high in the Upper James River watershed in Virginia. The project not only reconnected several miles of coldwater habitat that home to native brook trout, it improved access to a 5,000-acre tract of land that’s popular among hikers, hunters and other outdoors enthusiasts.

Good news for public lands! The Public Lands Integrity Act was introduced in the House today by Representatives Vasquez (D-NM), Ciscomani (R-AZ), Neguse (D-CO), Zinke (R-MT), and Titus (D-NV). This bipartisan legislation would ensure public lands could not be sold during the budget reconciliation process.

“America’s public lands are the backyard of the little guy, where families hike, float, camp, hunt, and fish for wild trout. Time and time again, Americans from all walks of life have stood up to oppose the sale of our public lands,” said Chris Wood, President and CEO of Trout Unlimited. “Trout Unlimited thanks the bipartisan coalition led by Representatives Gabe Vasquez and Juan Ciscomani for introducing the Public Lands Integrity Act and working together to safeguard public access, protect sensitive fish and wildlife habitat, and uphold the public trust for future generations.”

Keeping public lands in public hands ensures future generations can experience the same outdoor opportunities we cherish today. Support your public lands: tu.org/publiclands

Roadless areas aren’t just great places to fish and hunt, they are multiple use lands that are open to hazardous fuels reduction, OHV riding, firewood cutting, grazing, energy projects and mining development.

For 25 years the has balanced the protection of high-quality fish and wildlife habitat with active management and the needs of different user groups including ranchers, energy interests, local communities, hunters and anglers.

Swipe to learn more about some of the lesser-known activities allowed in roadless areas. Then, tell your members of Congress to defend the Roadless Rule at the link in bio.

In testimony before the U.S. House Natural Resources Committee, TU President and CEO Chris Wood opposed H.R. 7695, a bill that would nullify the 2001 Roadless Rule nationwide and prevent similar rules from being created and administered in the future.

“The Roadless Rule strikes a common-sense balance: the rule allows forest health projects and hazardous fuels treatments in Roadless Areas. Off highway vehicles, grazing, mining, energy development, firewood cutting, and other multiple use activities are all allowed within Roadless Areas. The only thing that is prohibited is the construction of new roads, a step that seems logical given the $6-7 billion maintenance backlog on the Forest Service’s existing 370,000 mile road system.” – Chris Wood

April was a busy month on the Hill for Trout Unlimited! TU staff from several Western states traveled to D.C. to meet with Congressional delegates on both sides of the aisle to discuss key issues including public lands, the Land and Water Conservation Fund, Legacy Restoration Fund, the Roadless Rule, and their importance to fish, wildlife, anglers and hunters.

This year, anglers in Idaho have a limited opportunity to chase spring Chinook in the Snake River basin. It is hard to overstate the importance of this fishery for regional anglers, tribes and communities, but the carefully managed season is also a reminder of what has been lost and why breaching the four lower Snake River Dams to rebuild salmon runs is so important.

In a new blog post, TU’s Eric Crawford looks at the mitigation and management required to make a season possible and points to the need to restore a free-flowing lower Snake River to restore salmon runs, and fishing seasons, defined by abundance instead of scarcity. Read it at the link in our bio.

Public lands deserve public input.

Trout Unlimited applauds Senator Bennet for introducing the Public Lands Integrity Act which would ensure America’s public lands could not be sold during the budget reconciliation process.

Last summer, anglers, hunters, and outdoor recreationists from all walks of life united to push back against attempts to sell public lands through the budget reconciliation process. This legislation would prevent similar backdoor attempts and ensure decisions about public land sales are made with transparency and public input.

Public lands are an essential part of our nation’s identity, economy, and outdoor traditions – let’s make sure we keep them in public hands. Step up. Be heard: tu.org/publiclands

It's almost time.

There’s just something about salmonfly season—
the anticipation, the giant bugs crawling everywhere, and the chance that the next eat could be absolute chaos.

You stood up for clean water and wildlife habitat. But how did your members of Congress vote?

Last week, thousands of hunters and anglers from across the country called their members of Congress urging them to protect the Boundary Waters from potentially harmful mining.

While many Senators and Representatives voted against this unprecedented resolution, a narrow majority did not. And now, irreplaceable fish and wildlife habitat is at risk.

It's up to us to protect clean water and public lands.
