There is still time to sign up for tomorrow's LGBTQIA+ Museum Staff & Students PAG meeting! As national conversations regarding LGBTQIA+ identities continue to be divisive, it is essential organizations invest in staff inclusion initiatives. While q***r leadership and decision-making is essential to successful, authentic work, it is also demanding work. Inclusion leaders are called upon to educate others, debate competing—if not outright discriminatory—perspectives, navigate complex organizational systems, and advise on rebuilding policy and culture.

Tomorrow, June 2 at 1 pm, join NEMA and Ali Kane for a workshop for inclusion leaders, LGBTQIA+ identifying and allies, who are seeking advice on developing healthy advocacy practices. We will explore ways to operationalize care and peer allyship, review best practices for having courageous conversations, and discuss sustainable self-care.

The NEMA Board and staff are excited to announce the search for our new Executive Director!

NEMA is seeking a dynamic and visible Executive Director (ED) to advance its mission and help shape the future of the museum field across New England. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED serves as the organization’s chief ambassador—building powerful connections among museum professionals, institutions, and allies, and championing the value of museums with civic leaders regionally and nationally.

This role blends vision and action: setting strategic direction, driving fundraising and engagement, offering useful programming to its members, and inspiring and mentoring a small but dedicated team. The ED has a unique opportunity to elevate NEMA’s voice, expand its impact, and help define what’s next for museums in the region and beyond.

On May 26, the Old Sturbridge Village community lost one of our own.
For more than 40 years, Tom Kelleher shared his extraordinary talent, humor, kindness, and dedication with everyone fortunate enough to know him. Since joining the Village in 1984, Tom devoted his life to helping bring history to life for generations of visitors through his scholarship, storytelling, craftsmanship, mentorship, and unforgettable performances.

Tom was a gifted historian, interpreter, curator, and educator whose impact on this Museum cannot be overstated. Whether reading the Declaration of Independence on the Fourth of July each year, bringing beloved historical stories to life, mentoring colleagues, volunteers, and others in the living history field, or keeping the Village’s historic mills running, Tom left an indelible mark on this place and all the people within it.

To many of us, Tom was far more than a coworker. He was a trusted friend, a mentor, and a deeply cherished member of the OSV family. His infectious laugh, care, and passion for history will be profoundly missed and forever remembered.
Our thoughts are with Tom’s family, loved ones, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Additional details regarding plans to honor Tom’s life and legacy will be shared at a later date.

We don’t need to tell you that this is a challenging time to be a museum professional. Everything from government funding, to public trust in institutions, to the connections between individuals and their communities are under strain.

Museums have always had to do a lot with very little. Now, more than ever, we are under pressure to do even more with even less. As museum workers struggle with burnout, isolation and an ever-shifting cultural landscape, the value of the strong regional infrastructure provided by NEMA is clear.

Here at NEMA, we see the important work that museums do for communities across the region: interpreting the world around us, creating spaces for intergenerational learning, and offering gathering spaces where communities can connect and encounter important stories. Museums do vital work in our society by encouraging lifelong learning and curiosity, respect for multiple perspectives, and a commitment to telling the truth.

We cannot do this alone. You can help us by supporting the connective tissue that NEMA provides to the field in the form of conference scholarships, leadership development, salary survey data, advocacy tools, peer support, and more. Help New England museums and the people who work in them to thrive.

Join in collective action with other NEMA members by giving today. Help us reach our goal of 50 gifts to the 2026 NEMA Annual Appeal by the end of our fiscal year on June 30, 2026. Gifts of all sizes help us to do our work in supporting colleagues and organizations in our area. Please give today: nemanet.org/give

NEMA exists to cultivate a better museum world and believes in expanding the interconnectedness of our field. In these times of uncertainty, we can come together to remind ourselves of why museums remain one of this country's most valuable and trusted community resources. Join us for a virtual town hall style gathering on June 9 at noon, to discuss the state of our field, federal funding cuts and anything else that's on your mind. While the landscape may look bleak, this space will be used to give each other much-needed support, hope, and build resilience for the future ahead.

Facilitated by NEMA Advocacy Committee Members:
Chuck Clark, Executive Director, Castle Preservation Society Castle in the Clouds
Kajette Solomon, Museum Social Equity & Inclusion Specialist, RISD Museum of Art
Amrys Williams, Executive Director, Connecticut League of Museums

The first 60 minutes will feature a more structured session, and the last 30 minutes being an open conversation.
