September is Attendance Awareness Month.

Every school day is an opportunity for students to learn, connect, grow, and build toward their future. But for many young people, getting to school consistently can be affected by challenges far beyond the classroom.

That’s why Communities In Schools works inside schools to connect students and families with the relationships, resources, and support they need to overcome barriers and stay engaged.

Attendance matters because being present matters—and every student deserves the opportunity to show up, feel supported, and succeed.

At Communities In Schools, we surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Every kid needs someone in their corner. 💙 For students supported by Communities In Schools, that's a caring adult who shows up for them, not just on the first day of school, but every day after. Sometimes our students say it better than we ever could. 💙

99% of students surveyed said their CIS Site Coordinator cares about them.

For some students, that means help with grades or attendance. For others, it means having someone to talk to on a hard day. Sometimes it simply means knowing there is an adult at school who will check in and ask, “Are you okay?”

That's what being present looks like.

When a community shows up for students, the impact reaches far beyond the classroom. 🧡

In a recent op-ed, Michelle Katz, Executive Director of Communities In Schools of New Mexico, shares what it looks like to surround students and families with the resources, relationships, and opportunities they need to thrive.

This year alone, CIS of New Mexico has:

🍎 Helped provide more than **106,000 meals** to students and families
🏠 Supported **165 families** facing eviction, foreclosure, or utility shutoffs
📚 Delivered more than **1,300 tutoring sessions**
🤝 Provided more than **8,000 individualized student supports**
🎓 Helped achieve a **96% graduation rate among case-managed seniors**

Through strong partnerships with schools, families, volunteers, community organizations, and supporters, CIS of New Mexico continues to show what it means to be present for students every day.

Because when we invest in our kids, we invest in a stronger future for the entire community.

The school year is off to a strong start in Memphis! 🎒📚👟

Communities In Schools National, Whataburger, and CIS of Memphis came together for the **Ready, Set, Learn! Back-to-School Event**, bringing students, families, volunteers, community partners, and supporters together for a day centered on connection, resources, and preparing students for success.

More than **300 students were served** with book bags, school supplies, sneakers, and other essentials to help them start the year ready to learn. Families also enjoyed food provided by Whataburger, face painting, a DJ, a bouncy house, and family-friendly activities throughout the day.

This is what it looks like when a community comes together around students. By connecting schools, families, volunteers, businesses, and community partners, CIS helps ensure students have the resources and support they need to show up ready, confident, and prepared for the year ahead. 🧡

A successful school year starts long before the first bell rings. 🔔📚

For Zowee Strong, CIS Site Coordinator with Family Connection-CIS Athens at Cedar Shoals High School, preparing students for a new year means months of planning, relationship-building, family engagement, and collaboration with school staff, all before students walk through the doors.

From helping incoming freshmen navigate high school through Freshman Academy to creating a welcoming space where students feel safe, supported, and seen, Zowee is making sure students begin the year knowing one thing: someone is already in their corner. 💙💛

Because being ready for back-to-school isn’t just about schedules and supplies. It’s about building the connections and support systems that help students thrive from day one through graduation.

✨ New School Year. New Possibilities.
