Over the past three years, Spirit of America has provided $1M in support to Afghans refugees through the , creating pathways to education, professional, and vocational training in six countries across the Middle East and Central Asia.

One example of this work is the creation of American Space-Vahdat Extension, a program built in collaboration with American Councils for International Education and U.S. EMBASSY, DUSHANBE, TAJIKISTAN that supports the Afghan refugee community in Tajikistan. Through English language classes, tech and IT training, and a variety of workshops focused on things like art therapy, sustainable living, and mentorship, Afghan youth are being equipped with essential skills and knowledge for their personal and professional development.

Earlier this month, the 4th cohort of 15 Tajiks and 15 Afghans graduated together from a 2-month English and Soft Skills Learning course. Students strengthened their English proficiency and developed skills like public speaking and problem solving. The program also created space for cultural exchanges and celebrated a love for collaborative learning. 🇺🇸🇹🇯🇦🇫

This is Rahwa's story. 💞

After the Taliban retook Afghanistan, Spirit of America acted quickly to help our loyal Afghan partners who were in danger because of their connections to the United States. Working closely with Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin and the U.S. Embassy Tirana, our team facilitated the evacuation of 121 Afghans — including 63 women and 38 children — from Kabul to Albania.

While they waited for nearly 7 months to be resettled in the U.S., Spirit of America assumed responsibility for the entirety of their care, identifying needs tailored to each individual and family, like Rahwa's.

Spirit of America is forever grateful to our generous supporters who helped make a new future possible for Rahwa, her family, and so many others.

48 hours after the fall, Spirit of America’s then-Middle East Director Zack Bazzi was on the ground in Qatar, where tens of thousands of Afghans evacuated by the United States were being processed and screened.

Working alongside U.S. military teams and local partners, Spirit of America provided emergency assistance to more than 25,000 evacuees in Qatar, including “farewell” aid packages tailored for Afghans leaving the country. Packages of clothing, hygiene supplies, phone chargers, and other essentials were customized for evacuees of all ages. 

Spirit of America continued to support their needs at Camp As Sayliyah for a number of months, providing arts, crafts, and playground supplies for children; audio visual equipment so Afghans could enjoy movie nights and watch soccer matches; and education. In collaboration with U.S. Embassy Doha, we funded English proficiency exams — required for work and student visas — for promising young Afghans.

When Kabul fell to the Taliban on August 15, 2021, Spirit of America’s unprecedented partnership with the U.S. military gave us the ability to support evacuation efforts directly. Working with U.S. Central Command and coordinating with the Department of State, we organized flight manifests and helped at-risk Afghans – many who worked alongside U.S. troops and organizations like USAID in the region – get to the Kabul airport and through security checkpoints.

The first photo of a crowded U.S. Air Force C-17 transport aircraft was the first U.S. flight to leave Afghanistan on August 17. It landed at Al Udeid Air Base, a U.S. military base in Qatar, where Spirit of America personnel were already on the ground preparing to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to the evacuees. On , we’re reflecting on the thousands of amazing kids and young people we’ve encountered at Spirit of America. Through our work around the globe, our team is constantly reminded that investing in young people is one of the most powerful ways we can create a better and safer future for all.

We’ve seen firsthand the magic that occurs when students and young leaders are empowered to turn their ideas into action. Whether it’s Ukrainian teenagers rebuilding their communities, Afghan refugees pursuing higher education, or Syrian students helping restore their own schools, young people aren’t waiting to inherit a future — they’re building one.

Congratulations to our friend and partner Gen. Serhii Sobko, who has just promoted to Vice Commander of the Збройні Сили України / The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), the second highest military position in the country.

Spirit of America was honored to work alongside Gen. Sobko in 2022, right after Russia’s full-scale invasion. At the time, he was the Chief of Staff of the Ukrainian Territorial Defense Forces (TDF), which began as a volunteer militia force in 2014, and became an official part of the Ukrainian military just before the full-scale invasion. Spirit of America provided more than 200 tons of body armor, helmets, first aid and trauma kits, satellite phones, radios, ready-to-eat meals, and other lifesaving aid directly to the TDF, and General Sobko’s guidance on what would be most effective was critical to the impact of our support.

We also helped launch the TDF’s Captain’s Career Course, a six-week program of military, leadership, and combat readiness training designed to strengthen the effectiveness of the TDF’s largely volunteer force. This training was designed with insights from General Sobko, who completed his own Captain’s Course years earlier at Fort Benning.

General Sobko’s decades of combat-tested military service, strategic leadership, and commitment to Ukraine’s freedom make him exceptionally well suited to lead as AFU Vice Commander. We wish him all the best in his new role.

Yesterday, the U.S. Coast Guard celebrated its 236th birthday. It's a perfect opportunity to highlight our own Colleen Denny, current Philanthropic Advisor and former Europe Director, who is a 2009 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. After graduating, Colleen spent 8 years in the service, commanding a Fast Response Cutter and leading search and rescue, counter-narcotics, and humanitarian missions across Central America, the Caribbean, and the Florida Straits. 🛟

Colleen was recently invited back to the Academy to speak to current cadets and be a guest on Corps Conversations, the student-run podcast on campus. Reflecting on her journey from military service to the nonprofit sector, she shared how the Coast Guard taught her to stay calm under pressure, tackle complex problems, and lead through uncertainty — lessons that continue to guide her work at Spirit of America.

Spirit of America partnered with the CSIS Middle East Program to convene a private Policy to Practice dialogue focused on supporting partners across the Levant amid a rapidly evolving regional landscape.

The conversation opened with remarks from General (Ret.) Joe Dunford, CEO of CSIS and Spirit of America Advisory Board member, alongside our Founder and CEO, Jim Hake. Together with leaders from government, the military, think tanks, and academia, participants explored practical approaches to strengthening stability and security in the Middle East.

Thank you to CSIS | Center for Strategic & International Studies, General Dunford, and everyone who contributed their expertise and perspectives. We’re proud to help convene conversations that help bridge policy and practice, and ultimately turn ideas into action.
