During in New York, Jim Hake and the Spirit of America team partnered with Foreign Policy to convene a roundtable of philanthropic, business, policy, national security, and technology leaders to discuss an important question: How can private citizens and organizations help strengthen America's national security?

The conversation highlighted a growing recognition that national security is not solely the government's responsibility. Entrepreneurship, private sector support, and local partnerships all play an important role in advancing America's interests and strengthening the security of our allies and partners.

Thank you to Foreign Policy for helping facilitate this thoughtful discussion and to everyone who contributed their perspectives. We are encouraged by the shared commitment to building a stronger, more resilient national security model through partnership, innovation, and the American spirit.

October 1 marks the Day of Defenders of Ukraine. 🇺🇦🪖

The day honors the men and women valiantly fighting for Ukraine's freedom, sovereignty, and future.

Their courage is not only extraordinary. It is rooted in generations of resistance from a centuries-long fight for the right to exist. While much of the world witnesses Russia's brutal aggression through headlines and screens, Ukrainian defenders come face-to-face with the consequences of that aggression every day.

They continue to hold the line against a common adversary, defending not only their homeland but also the security of allies worldwide. In the face of relentless attacks, they have shown remarkable resilience, sacrifice, and determination.

Spirit of America is proud to stand with them.

Recently, Spirit of America’s Vice President of Program Operations Michèle Piercey and Asia-Pacific Senior Regional Program Manager Lucas Wuebben traveled to Taiwan to commemorate the 9-21 anniversary and observe disaster preparedness training and exercises.

9-21 refers to the 1999 Jiji earthquake in Taiwan, the second-deadliest earthquake in Taiwan’s history. The disaster galvanized emergency response civil resilience efforts across the island.

Every September 21st, Taiwan commemorates the disaster and observes . This year, in addition to observing the exercises alongside our Taiwanese partners, Michèle spoke at the second annual Resilient Taiwan for Sustainable Democracy International Forum, hosted by 總統府發言人 and the Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience Committee.

In her remarks, Michèle touched on Spirit of America’s partnerships in Taiwan since 2021 and underscored the progress the Taiwanese people have made towards disaster preparedness and civil resiliency.

Spirit of America recently partnered with the Hudson Institute to convene senior leaders across government and industry to discuss the Red Sea and U.S. national security - reflecting what our organization does best: turning ideas into action.

Connecting Europe and the Mediterranean with the Gulf, East Africa, and the Indo-Pacific, the is a critical artery for global commerce and an increasingly important theater for U.S. national security.

The evening opened with remarks from Wayne W., Senior Director for Middle East and Africa at the National Security Council. Moderated by Joshua Meservey, Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute; Christopher White, Spirit of America Regional Director for Africa; and Mary Bell Ruiz, Spirit of America Regional Director for the Middle East, the discussion examined the challenges shaping this important region and explored how stronger partnerships across sectors can advance U.S. and regional security.

Years of violent conflict in Mangu, Nigeria, left deep divisions between two neighboring communities. And while violence had subsided by 2025, residents described the situation as a "graveyard peace,” where relationships remained broken and communities experienced deep mistrust and social isolation.

Since January, Spirit of America has been working with Search for Common Ground Nigeria and the U.S. Embassy to rebuild trust and create mechanisms for dialogue. Through this partnership, we convened citizens with security services across communal and political fault lines. The resulting Community Safety and Resilience Committees are keeping people safe and resolving conflicts before they turn violent.

Efforts like these reflect the goals the U.S. and Nigerian governments have set through their Joint Working Group on protecting communities in the Middle Belt and demonstrate that progress is possible when American investment puts local communities in the lead.

For millions of Ukrainians, the conflict is not fading into the background. It is intensifying.

July and August were the deadliest months for Ukrainian civilians since Russia’s full-scale invasion began. In August alone, Russia launched more than 6,000 drones, 5,000 aerial bombs, and 200 missiles across Ukraine.

On August 27, Kyiv recorded 13 air raid alerts in a single day, the highest number since February 2022. On September 8, Kyiv faced air raid alerts for over 17 hours. Imagine a city with the population size of Chicago repeatedly forced to seek shelter under increasing attacks.

Russia is adapting its tactics to wear down the Ukrainian people. Ukrainians continue to demonstrate extraordinary resilience — but admiring their strength cannot replace helping now.

For two members of Spirit of America's International Operations team, the events of September 11 inspired them to enlist in the U.S. military.

Two other team members are part of a new generation who never experienced 9/11 or were too young to remember it.

But for them all, it's a moment in our history that has inspired them to engage and unite in working to make America — and our world — a better and safer place.
