Ascend Pakistan: Leadership through Athletics

Ascend Pakistan: Leadership through Athletics Empowering young Pakistani women through mountaineering & leadership training. We build confidence & resilience, creating future leaders.

Ascend: Leadership Through Athletics (Pakistan)

Ascend has been serving young women since 2014. Our proudest achievement is seeing our program graduates transform their lives through education; nearly all Ascend graduates have gone on to university studies. Most of them come from families where their parents are not literate, so these girls are breaking barriers in a profound way. We use mountain

climbing to build confidence and strength. Some of our girls have accomplished significant climbing feats. The program uses mountain climbing as a vehicle to cultivate unity and a sense of shared achievement among women of different ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic groups. Team members are challenged to overcome stereotypes and biases and work together to achieve a difficult but tangible goal. The unique attributes of mountain climbing make it an ideal sport for developing strong teams; remote settings far from the distractions of everyday life allow us to create a secure environment in which team members can bond. The nature of mountaineering requires discipline and precision, and each member of the group relies on the others for her safety. This environment fosters a camaraderie rarely experienced in a culture where women have little opportunity to build relationships with one another outside of the family structure, or beyond their own socioeconomic or ethnic background. Training includes a blend of physical (fitness and technical) training along with formal instruction in conflict resolution, leadership, and psychology. The program inspires other women with an example of unity and athletic achievement at a time of widespread anxiety about the future. Such a straightforward, universally understood achievement as reaching a mountain peak pushes the bounds of belief in what women are capable of doing and sets an example for young people in Pakistan and beyond.

Today, on , we honor the resilience of all women in Pakistan, especially those in regions like Skardu and Gilgit-Baltistan.

These incredible young women face unique challenges—from limited access to education and professional opportunities to societal expectations. But they are not defined by these barriers.

On our recent camping trip, our Ascend fellows from Skardu demonstrated true leadership. In the mountains, they learn resilience, teamwork, and mental fortitude. They are not just climbing peaks; they are shattering glass ceilings and redefining their futures.

Through mountaineering and community engagement, they build self-confidence and courage to become leaders and entrepreneurs in their own communities. They are the role models for the next generation, showing that with the right tools, there is no summit too high to reach.

We are so proud of our .

Ascend instructors and trainees spent a day at the Degree College Hussainabad, a vibrant girls’ college in Skardu for a special community service session. In observance of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), we gathered under the theme: “Youth Engagement - Empowering Young Activists and Leadership.”

The session was a powerful exchange of energy and ideas. Our team presented on the crucial role young women play in driving social change, followed by interactive activities designed to spark dialogue, build confidence, and hone leadership skills. Witnessing the students’ insightful perspectives, bold questions, and collaborative spirit was truly inspiring.

These young leaders are not just the future—they are the present. Equipping them with knowledge, a supportive network, and a platform for their voices is essential in the collective fight against GBV and in building a more equitable society.

A heartfelt thank you to the amazing students and faculty of the college for their warm welcome and passionate participation. The light in Skardu is shining bright! 🧡

This World Children’s Day, we’re celebrating the brightest futures we know—the children of Skardu and its adjoining vicinities. At Ascend, our mission is built on a simple, powerful belief: every child deserves a safe, healthy, and joyful environment to learn, play, and grow.

Our work in these majestic landscapes goes beyond physical activity. It’s about building confidence, fostering teamwork, and nurturing dreams. We see potential in every smile and resilience in every step. The narratives of courage and hope from our communities, which you see on our pages, are a testament to the incredible spirit of these young souls.

To ensure we provide the highest standard of care and protection, we are proud to share that the entire Ascend team is now certified in Child Safeguarding Training by UNICEF. This crucial qualification equips us with the knowledge and tools to create a secure, respectful, and empowering space for every child we work with. Their safety and well-being are our non-negotiable priorities.

Join us in championing the rights and potential of every child. Together, let’s build a world where they can truly ascend to their greatest heights.

Today, on , we at Ascend Athletics are reflecting on a core promise we make to our community: the unwavering commitment to safeguarding every child we serve.

Our work in Skardu is built on a foundation of trust. We are entrusted with the dreams and potential of incredible young athletes. This sacred trust comes with a profound responsibility to ensure their safety, dignity, and well-being are always the priority, both on and off the field.

That’s why we are immensely proud to announce that our entire Skardu team, under the leadership of our Country Director for Pakistan, has successfully completed the UNICEF Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) training and is now officially certified.

This certification isn’t just a document; it’s a fundamental part of our ethos. It equips our team with the vital knowledge and tools to create a protective environment, to prevent harm, and to ensure robust, safe reporting mechanisms are in place. It’s our proactive pledge to the children and their families that our spaces are safe spaces.

Because every child deserves to play, learn, and ascend in an environment free from fear. Protecting them isn’t an add-on—it’s the very heart of our mission.
