The Association of Military Banks (AMBA) is the only trade association representing banking institutions specializing in providing banking services for military personnel and their families around the world. AMBA’s membership includes large and small national and state chartered banks, most operating on military installations and all insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). AMBA represents the interests of banking institutions serving the military. AMBA serves as a liaison with DoD, Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS), Military Services, Treasury, FDIC, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), and its Office of Servicemember Affairs (OSA). Our mission is to continue the close working relationship with the nation’s major banking trade associations, including the American Bankers Association and the Independent Community Bankers of America, and the federal banking regulators. AMBA works closely with the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) which administers the overseas worldwide military banking program through a contract with Bank of America, one of AMBA’s member banks. AMBA helps the commercial banking industry maintain regulatory compliance with the Department of Defense. AMBA recently visited Hawaii to engage with local financial institutions, military representatives, and community partners on ways to strengthen financial readiness for servicemembers, veterans, and military families across the Pacific. Discussions focused on financial readiness resources, Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) opportunities, philanthropic strategies, and the unique financial challenges facing Hawaii’s military community. The visit also highlighted opportunities to expand support through programs such as the Veterans Benefits Banking Program (VBBP) and strengthen collaboration among banks, military leaders, and community organizations. AMBA looks forward to building on these conversations and identifying practical ways to improve the financial well-being of those who serve and have served. This week, we continue to honor the memory of Colonel (Ret.) John M. Mitchell, former Chairman of the Association of Military Banks of America (2010–2012), longtime AMBA Board Director, and dedicated advocate for military banking.

John devoted a lifetime to serving others, as a U.S. Army officer, banking executive, and volunteer leader within Association of Military Banks of America (AMBA) and the Armed Forces Financial Network (AFFN). His leadership helped strengthen our Association and advance the mission of serving the financial needs of service members, veterans, and their families.

Those who served alongside John remember him as a true gentleman whose professionalism, integrity, and willingness to mentor others left a lasting impression on the military banking community.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to John's family, friends, former colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of service and leadership will not be forgotten.
