Mindful Memorial Foundation

Mindful Memorial Foundation Mission: Mindfully honoring fallen service members. Ben King is the founder of Mindful Memorial Day.

A veteran of the war in Iraq, Ben was injured in and IED explosion on New Years Eve of 2006. Ben returned home to find challenges with his ability to sleep and other agitation. Connecting with yoga and mindfulness practice, he discovered tools that he could use to be present, to calm his heart and mind, and to get some sleep. With his successful practice in place, Ben wanted to bring the benefits

he was experiencing to others. He started Armor Down, an organization designed to bring mindfulness practice teaching and support to veterans and active duty service people. Extending this practice to even more connection through gratitude and healing, Ben started the Mindful Memorial Foundation to engage mindfulness practitioners, warriors, healers, and citizens in a focused practice at Arlington National Cemetery. Through Mindful Memorial Foundation, all fallen soldiers who lost their lives since 9/11 and who are buried at Arlington are honored with acts of mindfulness and gratitude. Their families are notified and receive a photo letting them know that their loved one has been recognized and honored through this program and these practices.

The post-9/11 era is over.

Yesterday, I stood again in Section 60 at Arlington National Cemetery with the Mindful Memorial Foundation board. We honored 19 fallen female warriors—our first time back since retiring the Fallen Warrior Ribbon Memorial after a decade of service.

The first to fall in this era was AF MSGT Evander E. Andrews, on October 10, 2001.
The last was MC SGT Nicole L. Gee, on August 26, 2021, at Abbey Gate in Kabul.

Two decades of war. Thousands of lives. And now—a chapter closed.

We’ve never approached remembrance through judgment or myth. We meet war with mindful presence. In the stories we honored yesterday, we saw courage, sacrifice, betrayal, and grief. All of it. Because that is the truth of war. And that is what we honor.

We will never stop remembering.
We will never stop honoring.
We simply begin again—with presence.

In conversation today with two veterans of the 9/11 wars, the notion that Abbey Gate represents the end of the 9/11 wars came up. Does that notion resonate with anyone? if you fought in one of the 9/11 wars or anything connected to it, between 91/1 and would it be OK if you thought of that war as being over and today being the anniversary of the end?

Due to the poor weather forecast tomorrow morning, we have had to make the difficult call to move the Commonwealth's Memorial Day Ceremony indoors in our Veterans Hall. Parking and seating will be limited but WTVR CBS6 will be televising our ceremony live.

The laying of wreaths will be held outdoors in our Shrine of Memory: 20th Century at the conclusion of the indoor ceremony and the afternoon's concert by Richmond Cadet Alumni Band and Friends will be indoors in our Veterans Hall @ 2:00 pm.

And wherever you may be for Memorial Day, please take a moment to remember those have died while serving in the U.S. military.

Let us never forget!
