Arlington Concert Band

Arlington Concert Band We are a wind & percussion ensemble comprised of more than 50 local volunteer musicians who are passionate about bringing music to the community.

The Arlington Concert Band (ACB), formerly the Arlington Community Band, is a wind ensemble made up of more than 40 professional music educators and dedicated, talented amateur musicians. We perform regularly throughout the community and play a variety of music, from marches, to show tunes to classical arrangements. The ACB is made up of musicians from a variety of backgroundsโ€”from lawyers to IT professionals to retireesโ€”but weโ€™re all united around the ACBโ€™s mission.

๐Ÿชˆ Instrument: Clarinet

๐Ÿ•’ Seasons with ACB: 3

๐Ÿ’ผ Day Job: Software Engineer

๐Ÿ“ Where did you grow up and where did you go to college: Iโ€™m a triple hokie! I got two bachelors degrees and a masters from tech and loved my 7 years in The Marching Virginians as a clarinet player, rank captain, drum major, and then staff assistant! ๐Ÿฆƒ

๐ŸŽผ Favorite part about playing in the ACB: The kind and dedicated friends in my section that I get to play alongside every week!

๐ŸŽต How you chose your instrument: In 5th grade when I couldnโ€™t make a note on the trombone!

๐Ÿ˜Ž Favorite piece you've ever played: Blue Shades and Aranjuez

๐ŸŽถ Fun Fact: Some of my other hobbies are fostering cats and dogs, flying trapeze, and wildlife photography!

๐ŸŽบ Instrument: Trumpet

๐Ÿ•’ Seasons with ACB: 4

๐Ÿ’ผ Day Job: Cancer epidemiologist and PhD student

๐Ÿ“ Where did you grow up and where did you go to college: Purcellville, VA/UVA, currently studying at GW!

๐ŸŽผ Favorite part about playing in the ACB: The community! I've made many friends through ACB that I would have never met otherwise.

๐ŸŽต How you chose your instrument: I thought I wanted to play the trombone but my little 8 year old arms were too short, so I picked the trumpet instead.

๐Ÿ‚ Favorite piece you've ever played: October by Eric Whitacre

๐ŸŽถ More about Summer: I'm a life long band kid! I first started playing piano when I was 4 and picked up the trumpet at age 8 (it's crazy to realize as I'm writing this that I've played for 20 years!). I stuck with it through middle and high school, and played in the Cavalier Marching Band throughout my time at UVA. When I moved to Arlington post-grad and received the community learning catalog in the mail, I was so excited to see that we had a community band and joined right away. I've had to miss out on a couple of semesters of ACB due to my PhD program, but I'm SO glad to be back!!

๐Ÿ•’ Seasons with ACB: 2

๐Ÿ’ผ Day Job: Elementary Music / Band & Orchestra Teacher

๐Ÿ“ Where did you grow up: Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA.

๐ŸŽผ Favorite part about playing in the ACB: Being surround by people who not only love music but have a different background. It's so refreshing.

๐Ÿ’ƒ Favorite piece you've ever played: Danzon No. 2 by Arturo Mรกrquez

๐ŸŽถ More about Michelle: I started my musical journey in 4th grade like most people. However, I remember leaving the instrument try out saying I should have picked percussion. Thinking about it now, I am so happy that I stuck with the flute. I grew up playing in many youth ensembles in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio. I graduated from Duquesne University with a Bachelors in Music Education where I continue to grow and share my love of music. While teaching, I found myself longing to play again in a group, which is how I ended up at ACB.

๐Ÿ•’ Seasons with ACB: 2

๐Ÿ’ผ Day Job: Full time mom / previously Marketing Brand Manager in CPG

๐Ÿ“ Where did you grow up and where did you go to college: Birmingham, AL / University of Southern Mississippi

๐ŸŽผ Favorite part about playing in the ACB: The camaraderie and the level of playing.

๐ŸŽต When you chose your instrument: My parents had a flute and it was given to me to play at age 10.

๐Ÿ’ƒ Favorite piece you've ever played: Libertango by Astor Piazzolla

๐ŸŽถ More about Ruth: Music has always been in my life. As the daughter of a band director myself, I grew up playing piano in a conservatory school in Birmingham, AL and then had a flute handed to me when I was in 5th grade by my parents which was love at first toot. I went on to play principal flute in the Alabama Youth Symphony and then received a Bachelors degree in Flute Performance from the University of Southern Mississippi. (I also was a drum major for the Pride of Mississippi marching band!).

After college, and a stint as the Education Manager for the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra in Long Beach, CA, I moved into digital media and eventually brand management at Nestlรฉ. I now enjoy playing and singing in a few groups in the area as well as serving on a couple of non profit boards and running around and enjoying my 6 year old son and 3 year old daughter.

๐Ÿ’ผ Day Job: Cyber Security Consultant

๐Ÿ“ Where did you grow up and where did you go to college: I grew up in Downers Grove, Illinois near Chicago, and I went to Purdue University. Boiler Up!

๐ŸŽผ Favorite part about playing in the ACB: Continuing to be able to play music after college and having a place to make friends outside of work.

๐ŸŽถ Favorite piece you've ever played: It would have to be a tie between Angels in the Architecture by Frank Ticheli and Scootin on Hardrock by David R. Holsinger.

๐ŸŽต How you chose your instrument: I picked the trombone at age 10 in 5th grade beginning band because it was the only one that didnโ€™t have buttons or valves and I wanted to be different.

๐Ÿ’ก Fun Fact: My first day of community band I used my 5th grade trombone since I hadnโ€™t bought a new one for myself yet, it broke during that first rehearsal and I now have plans to turn it into a lamp.
