Chris Lantos Foundation

Chris Lantos Foundation Remember Chris's courageous battle with Leukemia. In his memory, we keep fighting for a cure to stop He needed frequent blood and platelet transfusions. Mittens.

Christopher Jay Lantos was born on September 29th of 2000 in Washington, DC. He was diagnosed with T-cell type ALL leukemia in September 2012, three weeks after starting 6th grade in Williamsburg Middle School. He proudly took the school bus to and from school and enjoyed his growing independence responsibly until September 26, the day of his diagnosis. He was referred to Georgetown University Hos

pital where he was started right away on a protocol for his type of disease. He was inpatient for two weeks followed by outpatient treatment with regular clinic visits. After about one month from diagnosis his cancer was in remission. Treatment continued with encouraging results until about mid March of 2013 when he was hospitalized with fever and low blood counts on March 23. After numerous tests that ruled out infection, virus or fungus, a diagnosis of HLH was established. This was around mid April. It was then that we decided to transfer him to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital which is acknowledged as the best hospital in the US for this type of illness, and we wanted to give him the best treatment possible for HLH. We arrived in Cincinnati to the bone marrow transplant unit where children with HLH are treated. Again, scores of tests and initial treatments of heavy chemo drugs followed. After about two weeks Chris was transferred to the oncology unit. According to the latest diagnosis his HLH morphed into malignant histiocytic sarcoma, a very rare and special type of malignancy. For this condition there was not really any known treatment option or protocol. Doctors tried several chemo drugs and radiation to no avail. On June 7, 2013, it was Chris’ wish to return to Georgetown, to his home hospital, as he put it. He passed away on June 12, 2013, nine months after his initial diagnosis, at the age of 13. Chris was an open, fun-loving, honest boy who did not think twice to let his opinion known about things that mattered to him. He graduated sixth grade on June 10th, 2013. Chris joined the Cub Scouts at age six and was an active member of Pack 167. He especially enjoyed nature and all kinds of outdoor activities. He participated in several hikes and camping trips. As a cub scout he attended Goshen summer camp twice for one week accompanied by his dad. He moved on to Boys Scout Troop 647 in 2012 and took his first independent summer camp trip to Goshen in the summer of that year. Chris was an active traveler. His first international trip was to Hungary at the age of 11 months. He visited that country almost every year of his life. Chris loved water. Lake, stream, pond, river or ocean, he cherished them all. Some of his favorite spots were the Outer Banks in North Carolina, Lake Balaton and Lake Orfu in Hungary, Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Tampa, Florida, Sandy Point Beach Park in Maryland, Lake Merriweather at the Boys Scout reservation at Goshen. Or the pool at the Arlington YMCA where celebrated his tenth an eleventh birthdays with his friends. Being a single child he loved spending time with them and built several close relationships. Sidney, Brian, Johnny, CJ and his niece, Blanka, in Budapest, Hungary, were particularly close to him. Chris passed away on June 12th, 2013 at Georgetown University Hospital after heroically battling a viciously complex blood cancer for nine months. He is survived by his parents Ilona and Attila Lantos, relatives in Hungary and his cat Mr.

Closing This Chapter with Gratitude
After 13 meaningful years of service, the Chris Lantos Foundation will be concluding its mission at the end of this fiscal year.
This decision marks a deeply symbolic milestone: 13 years with Chris, and 13 years since his passing. We’ve been honored to serve in his memory, bringing iPads and comfort to children with cancer across the country.
The foundation continues to fulfill its mission until the end of our fiscal year, June 30, 2026. But now is the right time to bring closure to this chapter — with intention, with dignity, and with immense gratitude.
We want to thank every hospital partner, donor, volunteer, and friend who made this journey possible. Your kindness and commitment helped us carry Chris’s legacy into hundreds of hospital rooms, treatment centers, and young lives.
We will no longer be accepting donations or iPad requests after May 30, 2026.
Though the foundation’s work is ending, our family personally will continue to support children with cancer through other organizations — and we encourage you to do the same. One group we wholeheartedly recommend is our friends and inspiration, the Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation.
Thank you for walking alongside us.
With love and gratitude,
Ilona Lantos

What an amazing fundraiser todat for the Chris Lantos Foundation by our church family at the Clarendon United Methodist Church. We remembered our son Chris and handed out beautiful handmade ribbons with Chris’ name on it. Thanks for Joanne Sweeney for making these beautiful ribbons every September. Thanks to Lisa Gibbs Smith for speaking about Chris and the significance of September, the childhood cancer awareness month. Thanks to all the people who pulled this event together with such a great success. And thanks to all who attended and supported our work to help kids with cancer today and beyond. In the 10 years of the Foundation’s inception we gave 480 ipads to pediatric cancer patients.

Go gold in September!🎗️
September is childhood cancer awareness month. Wear gold to raise awareness.🎗️ Every day about 46 children are diagnosed with cancer in the USA.☹️
Every year we hand out gold ribbons for childhood cancer awareness in our church, the Clarendon United Methodist Church. The ribbons are hand made by our friend and supporter Joanne Sweeney. This year she attached pollinator beads. Chris loved chasing butterflies.
