Symptoms of alpha-gal syndrome can range from mild to severe and often appear 3-6 hours after eating red meat.

Common symptoms of alpha-gal allergy include:
- Hives or an itchy rash
- Severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Heartburn or indigestion
- Coughing, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing
- Swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, or eyelids
- Dizziness or a drop in blood pressure

When symptoms are getting worse quickly and affect more than one body part, it is called anaphylaxis. This needs immediate treatment with epinephrine.

Looking for allergy-friendly breakfast ideas? We’ve got you covered with 89 recipes and easy tips for making breakfast favorites without common food allergens.

Our own Melanie Carver shared insight on how to make breakfast allergy-friendly with Modern Wellness Guide.

Among the tips: Most muffin recipes are flexible: wheat flour can be replaced with other flour mixes like oat, millet, quinoa, rice, and sorghum; egg can be replaced with fruit sauce, vegetable puree (like sweet potato), chia or flax seed goo; cow’s milk can be replaced with water or plant-based milk.

We’ve all heard it. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. The reality is, all meals are important, and what matters most to the 22 million people in the U.S. with food allergies is finding allergy-safe foods that meet dietary needs throughout the day.

We’re sponsoring and hosting a panel talk on asthma and allergy triggers at the Black Man’s Health Festival®, hosted by , Body & Soul, Inc. in Brooklyn, NY. Brooklyn and Bronx have higher rates of asthma, ED visits, and hospital stays than other NY boroughs. We’ll be offering asthma screenings and sharing resources for asthma and food allergies.

Black people in the U.S. are disproportionately affected by asthma and food allergies. In 2023, Black men had the highest rate of asthma deaths. Access to health care and resources is critical to prevent and manage diseases. Community health events like these have the power to transform health and save lives!

This Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, communities showed up in the most meaningful ways.

From Ohio to Washington, Minnesota to California, families, friends, and supporters came together to remember, celebrate, and take action — raising over $90,000 to help AAFA save and improve lives.

To every organizer, volunteer, donor, and participant who laced up their shoes, swung a golf club, or bounced alongside their kids: thank you.

And to those we honored — Marisa, Zane, and Valerie — your legacies live on in every step taken, every dollar raised, and every community that continues to show up for one another.

As we wrap up our 42nd annual National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, we are energized by all the visibility asthma, allergies, and related type 2 conditions received. Thank you to our community, our ambassadors, our advocates, and our donors for your support. We can't do it without you! A very big thank you to Amgen, Genentech, Sanofi, and Regeneron who supported AAFA's awareness month initiatives for 2026.

We kicked off the month with our annual visit to the U.S. Capitol with the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) for World Asthma Day – sharing powerful stories from families and doctors about the real-life impacts of asthma and allergies. And, we secured 24 state-based awareness month resolutions/proclamations.

Throughout the month, we hosted and attended events across the country, launched national PSA campaigns on TV and social, released special episodes of our podcast, secured media coverage, published new health tools, offered grant opportunities, secured and shared resources and toolkits with health departments, pediatricians, and community-based organizations. We also collaborated in coalitions and with other groups to support National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month.

Alongside our partners with the Asthma & Allergy Friendly® Certification Program, we supported community events and provided education on building standards and indoor air quality. We’re grateful to all the companies who value this certification and commit to offering helpful products to our community.

Our friends at the American Lung Association highlighted their Clean Air for Schools program and mobilized advocates to respond to rollbacks on regulations on clean air and flavored e-cigarettes.

We're grateful our colleagues at the American College of Allergy Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) and the Allergy and Asthma Network (AAN) joined in for our 3rd annual Type 2 Inflammation Awareness Week to help educate patients and health care professionals about the underlying inflammation process that fuels allergic and inflammatory conditions. It is exciting to see support for this awareness week grow!

On the 2nd annual EoE Day, the EoE Day Alliance with the Global Allergy & Airways Patient Platform (GAAPP), the European Society of Eosinophilic Oesophagitis (EUREOS), and U.S. founding members AAFA, the American Partnership for Eosinophilic Disorders (APFED), the Campaign Urging Research for Eosinophilic Disease (CURED Foundation), and the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Connection Team (FAACT) released Knots, a short film about EoE. The alliance is transforming EoE care to shorten time to diagnosis by providing care frameworks, resources, and education. We’re grateful to the members of this alliance for their leadership and commitment!

We also appreciate Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) for incorporating our Food Allergy Awareness Month theme (The Power of Community) into their awareness month communications. When communities, organizations, and individuals come together, we can transform care and improve quality of life for the 22 million people with food allergies in the United States.

Asthma and allergic conditions require self-management to control, but this self-management is enhanced with support from the people around you. With increased knowledge by the general public of these conditions, we help people get to the doctor sooner, recognize symptoms, and know treatment options. That's the power of community to improve asthma and allergy health and save lives.

Giving children confidence means so much more than teaching them how to prevent allergic reactions or how and when to use epinephrine. It starts with community. Michael Pistiner, MD, MMSc, and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston host the Food Allergy Buddies program – a mentorship program for kids with food allergies that empowers the whole family and builds community. We dedicate today, May 28, 2026, as a time to celebrate and honor lives lost too soon from asthma or anaphylaxis. We reaffirm AAFA’s commitment to making a difference in the memory of the people who will live in our hearts forever.

https://community.aafa.org/blog/aafa-marks-day-of-remembrance-for-lives-lost-to-asthma-and-anaphylaxis

In the U.S., 9 to 11 people die from asthma every day. A few hundred people die each year because of severe allergic reactions, called anaphylaxis. Most of these deaths were preventable. We believe one life lost to asthma or anaphylaxis is one too many.

If you lost a loved one to asthma or anaphylaxis, please honor them in the comments below.
