This Memorial Day, we reflect on the shared history that connects us with our sister cities of Aachen, Germany, and Reims, France. Aachen was the first German city captured by Allied forces during World War II, while Reims holds a unique place in history as the site where Germany’s unconditional surrender was signed in May 1945, bringing the war in Europe to an end.
Across the region, history lives quietly in the cemeteries, the rebuilt cities, and the enduring friendships that emerged from profound loss and sacrifice. The Surrender Room at the recently reopened Musée de la Reddition in Reims remains a powerful place of remembrance and reflection on a pivotal moment in the 20th century.
On this day, we honor those who served and sacrificed, and we recognize the importance of international friendship, understanding, and peace.
