Every week, Carolyn Alexander calls four senior residents at Barclay Greenmount in Baltimore to check in and talk. They discuss their hobbies, their families, and what’s in store for the week ahead.

Friendly Phone Calls started with a question from Carolyn: What if older adults had a caring, familiar voice checking in on them each week? She brought the idea to the Baltimore County Government Volunteer Center, which connected her to us.

In case you missed it: There’s real progress on our Arlington development with Goodwill of Greater Washington. Crews have finished demolishing the former Goodwill store and are now building the foundation for the new building Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) is creating with Goodwill.

The new Goodwill store is expected to open in late 2027, and residents will begin moving in during 2028. Of the 128 homes, 94 will be family-sized and seven will offer permanent supportive housing.

Reaching this point took a wide range of local, state, and federal partners, including $13.6 million in grant and loan funding from Arlington County Virginia – Government and $12.8 million from Amazon.com's Housing Equity Fund. AHC is grateful to all its partners for helping bring homes, childcare, and a neighborhood store together on one site.

Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) is expanding health and wellness programming for our residents! AHC recently launched a partnership with Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington® (POBS) to provide free vision screenings, eye exams, and glasses to residents of all ages at Woodbury Park and The Frederick. We’re also planning another clinic for November at Gates of Ballston.

AHC is grateful to POBS for helping expand access to essential vision care for our residents and communities!

Last Thursday, AHC celebrated 50 years of impact in one unforgettable night.

More than 300 partners, supporters, and friends joined us on October 1 to celebrate five decades of homes and community. We premiered a video highlighting our history, honored two talented young residents, and finished the night on the dance floor.

A huge thank you to Harkins Builders for 20 years of partnership with Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC).

Since 2006, Harkins has built many of the communities AHC residents call home, from innovative properties like Allium Place to our current redevelopment with Goodwill of Greater Washington. The Harkins team also supports our Resident Services programs as volunteers, from grilling at Summer Camp Field Day to making welcome baskets for new residents.
