Water shapes our landscapes, our communities, and our stories. 🌊

TNC is a proud sponsor of "Lifeblood: Chesapeake River Stories," a new Maryland Public Television documentary exploring how the Chesapeake Bay’s vast network of rivers, creeks, and streams connects people, supports livelihoods, and inspires creativity across the region.

From the rush of Great Falls on the Potomac to quiet moments along the Patuxent and Susquehanna, the voices of kayakers, artists, and community members reveal the deep, personal relationships we all share with clean, flowing water—and why protecting it matters.

Monday Critter Cam Check! Blink and you’ll miss it. 👀 Those glowing eyes belong to a tiny mouse making a nighttime visit. How many seconds did it take you to spot it? 🐭

These small but important furballs help forests grow by caching (and forgetting!) acorns and seeds, which can sprout into new plants across the landscape.

Monday Critter Cam! 🌙🦫

Our wildlife camera at Nassawango Creek recently captured this beaver hard at work during the nighttime hours.

Beavers once disappeared from much of Maryland due to trapping, but today they’re reclaiming their role as keystone species on the Eastern Shore. By building dams and ponds, beavers help slow water flow, improve water quality, reduce downstream flooding, and create rich wetland habitat for countless plants and animals.

One animal. Big impact. Nature knows what it’s doing.

Last week, volunteers and staff came together at The Glades Preserve in western Maryland to plant nearly 5,000 red spruce trees over two days! 🌲

Red spruce forests create the cool, boreal feel of our highest mountains, and after heavy logging reduced them to just 10% of their former range, restoration has become critical for rebuilding healthy, climate‑resilient forests.

Huge thanks to everyone who joined us to keep this legacy growing. 🌱

Together, we’re helping ensure these forests, and the life they support, thrive for generations to come.

This week's Monday Critter Cam is all bout family! 🦢🦦

From a gaggle of goslings sticking close to their parents to otters tumbling and wrestling like siblings everywhere, family time may look a little different in the wild, but the love (and chaos) is universal. 💚

Monday Critter Cam Check: Birder Edition! 🐦 Our Nassawango Wildlife Cam has been busy as usual, and this week, it’s all about the birds.

We’ve put together a compilation of recent bird sightings, and now we want to know…
How many species can you identify? 👇

Watch the video, then drop your bird IDs in the comments. Bonus points if you can name all of them—or spot something others miss! (No Googling… unless you really have to 😉)

After the big coastal snowstorm that hit the Lower Shore in March, the Nassawango Preserve looked very different—blocked roads, downed trees, and trails that needed serious care.

Since then, members of the Nassawango Stewardship Committee have been out there week after week, clearing debris, reopening access, and making sure the preserve is safe and welcoming for visitors. Together, they’ve already put in dozens of volunteer hours restoring the preserve after the storm, and they’re still at it! 💚🌳

This kind of behind-the-scenes stewardship doesn’t always get seen, but it’s essential to keeping Nassawango healthy and accessible. We are incredibly grateful for the time, effort, and dedication these volunteers give to this special place.
