Congratulations to the 2026 Ronald F. Kirby Lifetime Achievement Award recipients, Bill Austin and Ashby Johnson!

AMPO is proud to recognize two individuals who have dedicated more than three decades to transportation planning, regional collaboration, and strengthening the MPO profession.

Bill Austin, Executive Director of the Morgantown Monongalia Metropolitan Planning Organization, has championed MPO collaboration and regional planning throughout his career, including leadership in the North Carolina and West Virginia associations of MPOs.

Ashby Johnson, former Executive Director of the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO), has advanced regional transportation planning in Central Texas and served as a leader in the national MPO community, including as AMPO President.

Their careers reflect the legacy of Ronald F. Kirby, whose dedication to professional excellence, collaboration, and regional consensus continues to inspire the transportation planning community.

As we gather in Sacramento for the 2026 AMPO Annual Conference, we’re excited to release Policy Roadmap IV, highlighting how member priorities are translating into bipartisan legislation and legislative progress.

The Roadmap covers four priorities:
• Modernizing metropolitan planning funding
• Empowering regional decision-making
• Right-sizing and streamlining federal programs
• Driving safety improvements through regional action

With IIJA expiring September 30, 2026, the months ahead are critical for shaping the next surface transportation law.
