Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinics is deeply honored to share that it has been awarded $25,000 from Inova Fairfax Hospital through the 2026 Inova Community Health Opportunities Grant, an investment that affirms the clinic’s mission to bring compassionate, high-quality care to underserved individuals and families across our region.

Pictured above, Alexandra Luevano, Program Director of Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinics, proudly represented the organization at the recent Inova Community Health Opportunities Luncheon, where partners came together in a spirit of shared purpose and hope to celebrate their collective impact on improving health outcomes throughout Northern Virginia.

This generous grant will help expand the clinic’s maternal health services, ensuring that expectant mothers, especially those facing significant barriers to care, are met with dignity, support, and compassion every step of the way. With this funding, Mother of Mercy will continue walking alongside women throughout their pregnancy journeys, providing timely screenings, thoughtful care coordination, and critical connections to medical and social resources.

More than just healthcare, this investment represents a promise: that every mother deserves to feel seen, supported, and cared for as she prepares to welcome new life. By strengthening these services, Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinics is helping build healthier families, nurturing stronger communities, and advancing a future where every child is welcomed into the world with hope and love.

One great teacher can change a life. Most of us can remember someone whose encouragement, expectations, or clarity helped us learn and grow.

In that spirit, Volunteer Coordinator Sadeka Haque thoughtfully planned, and hosted, our annual Volunteer Teacher Appreciation Dinner. More than 30 volunteers, family members, and staff from our Education Workforce Development Ministry gathered for an evening of gratitude, fellowship, and celebration.

“Mr. Lee” as he is called, has faithfully supported our adult education program for 10 years. Volunteer teachers like Mr. Lee are at the heart of our ministry, empowering students with the skills, confidence, and encouragement needed to pursue new opportunities and greater self-sufficiency.

We are deeply grateful for our EWD volunteers and staff, whose compassion, generosity, and commitment continue to create opportunities for hope, growth, and belonging.

We also wish to recognize one of our youth volunteers, whose poem was recently selected for publication in an anthology of the National High School Poets after winning a national poetry competition. His achievement is a wonderful reminder of the many gifts and talents shared by those who serve our community. Please take a moment and read his poem below.

"The Unlikely Scholars"

In that room, I’m teacher and student.
Many earthlings come around one table—
Guam beside Guatemala,
Senegal beside Seoul.
We trade dreams, while practicing diction,
grammar rules are kinder than immigration laws.
A young woman learns the word hope,
she boldly writes it on paper
and makes a promise to her future.
A grandfather laughs as he stumbles over sentences:
the sound of starting over.
There, language is a metaphor for belonging,
we do not just learn English.
We conjure courage.
We learn that home is not an address or a country,
It is where I can be who I am.
