On Juneteenth, we honor the enduring legacy of African American women whose courage, resilience, and service helped advance our Nation’s journey toward freedom.

Through their service, often at great personal risk, they contributed not only to the fight for liberty, but also to the promise of a more just and equitable future. Their strength, sacrifice, and determination helped shape the course of our Nation and opened doors for generations to come.

As we commemorate 251 years of women’s service to our Nation through our Women of Valor initiative, we honor the remarkable women who answered the call during the Global War on Terrorism.

Today, we highlight the service of Major Heather "Lucky" Penney, US Air Force, Retired.

Heather “Lucky” Penney graduated from Purdue University with plans to become a teacher, but when combat aviation opened to women, she pursued her dream of becoming a fighter pilot like her father, a Vietnam veteran and retired Air Force lieutenant colonel. Assigned to the D.C. Air National Guard’s 121st Fighter Squadron, she was the only woman in both her fighter pilot training class and squadron.

On September 11, 2001, then-First Lieutenant Penney was ordered to launch in an F-16 alongside Colonel Marc Sasseville to intercept United Flight 93. With no time to arm their aircraft, they were prepared to stop the hijacked airliner by sacrificing their own lives and ramming the plane if necessary. Before they could reach it, the passengers and crew of Flight 93 fought back, causing the aircraft to crash in Pennsylvania. Penney then helped secure Washington’s airspace and protect the President’s aircraft. She later served two tours in Iraq and continued her Air Force career before retiring in 2016.

As we commemorate 251 years of women’s service to our Nation through our Women of Valor initiative, we honor the remarkable women of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps, women who answered the call when America needed them most.

During World War II, a critical nursing shortage threatened both military and civilian healthcare. In response, Congress established the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps in 1943, creating one of the most successful wartime recruitment programs in American history.

More than 124,000 women enrolled, trained, and graduated as nurses, serving in military, federal, and civilian hospitals across the country. While nurses deployed overseas to support the war effort, Cadet Nurses ensured that communities at home continued to receive essential medical care. Their skill, dedication, and sacrifice helped sustain a Nation at war.

Their service was indispensable. Their impact was profound. Their legacy continues to inspire.

As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, we remember these women of valor whose commitment to service strengthened our Nation during one of its most challenging chapters.

Do you know a woman who served in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps? Help preserve her story by registering her in the Military Women’s Memorial Register, the nation’s largest database dedicated to the stories of women who served in and with the U.S. Armed Forces.

WOMEN OF VALOR - June 16, 1861, Dorothea Dix was appointed Superintendent of Army Nurses for the Union Army, becoming one of the most influential women of the Civil War and a pioneer in military nursing.

Recognizing the urgent need for organized care of wounded soldiers, Dix recruited, trained, and supervised thousands of women who served in Union military hospitals. She established standards for nursing service, improved hospital conditions, and helped bring order and professionalism to the Union Army's medical system.

Her appointment marked a turning point in military medicine and women's service, helping lay the foundation for the professional military nursing corps that would follow.

Beyond the war, Dix was a tireless advocate for the humane treatment of the mentally ill, leading reforms that transformed care in the United States and abroad.

Today, we honor Dorothea Dix and the generations of military nurses who have carried forward her legacy of care, courage, and service to our Nation. 🇺🇸

🇺🇸 Happy 251st Birthday, U.S. Army! 🇺🇸

For 251 years, the United States Army has stood as a steadfast guardian of our Nation, answering the call in times of war and peace, defending freedom, and protecting the ideals upon which America was built.

Today, we honor the generations of Soldiers who have worn the Army uniform with courage, selfless service, and unwavering dedication. We are especially proud to recognize the countless women who have served in and alongside the US Army for 251 years, many long before their service was officially recognized, and who continue to serve, lead, and inspire today.

As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, we remember that before there was a Nation, women and men were already answering the call to defend the promise of liberty.

To all Army Soldiers and Veterans, thank you for your service.

🎂 Happy 251st Birthday, US Army!
