5 Senses Learning is a non-profit corporation, dedicated to providing specialized services for students who struggle with the traditional classroom approach for learning to read. Each individual to small group session is delivered in-person in a classroom setting or through live lessons via web conferencing. Our students are assessed through authentic, individualized, survey-analysis assessments over 5 sessions, in order to obtain an accurate knowledge of each student’s strengths and weaknesses. This allows us to provide individualized goal charts and ensure careful placement in groups with peers of their same level and learning style when possible.
After students complete the assessment process, they then participate in an 8-week Reading Intervention Diagnostic Course that consists of 16 group sessions with lessons aimed to meet each student’s goal chart. Students may then continue to participate in additional reading intervention courses and/or sessions. Our teachers design individualized, weekly SMILA© lesson plans using continuous authentic assessments of each student to ensure automaticity with the sequential steps for reading development. These lesson plans are then delivered through in-person and/or live individualized group lessons.
Each intensive SMILA© lesson that students take part in will consist of specific features that cater to each student’s growth in reading based upon the methodical sequence for reading automaticity. SMILA© lessons are structured around a systematic approach starting with the smallest unit in reading and advancing to more difficult features after automaticity with the previous element in the reading sequence. In addition, our teachers participate in weekly collaboration meetings with our SMILA© Therapists, to discuss each student’s weekly progress. All of our teachers have been trained and certified through SMILA©. **SMILA© is an evidenced based, multisensory training that is certified through the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council.
