Whenever I speak alongside North Korean refugees, one question often comes up. Why hasn't there been a revolution in North Korea? The reality is that North Koreans have resisted.

In my column in today’s Korea Times, I write about some of the reported uprisings and alleged coup attempts, the smaller acts that rarely get counted, and the machinery the government built to keep any of it from spreading.

On June 18, 2026, Freedom Speakers International (FSI) had the privilege of speaking at Tarleton State University in Fort Worth, Texas. Students, faculty, and community members gathered to learn more about North Korea and hear firsthand about the experiences of North Korean refugees.

During the event, Songmi Han shared her personal journey from North Korea, FSI Co-Founder Eunkoo Lee discussed the history and mission of FSI, and Co-Founder Casey Lartigue Jr. provided additional insights into North Korea and the importance of creating opportunities for North Korean refugees to share their stories.

The program concluded with an engaging Q&A session, followed by a book signing and photos with attendees. Events like these create opportunities for meaningful dialogue, greater understanding, and direct engagement with North Korean refugee voices.

Thank you to Tarleton State University and everyone who joined us for this important conversation. We look forward to continuing to empower North Korean refugees through mentorship, opportunities, and partnerships.
