Many thanks to those who came to the Institute for Indo-Pacific Security’s inaugural event yesterday!

In “War, Pivot, and Competition - Two Decades of Making Asia Policy,” former Defense policymakers Richard Lawless, James Shinn, Wallace "Chip" Gregson, Mark Lippert, David Shear, Randall Schriver, and Ely Ratner spoke on their policymaking experiences that collectively span the Global War on Terror, the Pivot to Asia, and the current Strategic Competition with China.

The Institute for Indo-Pacific Security is proud to present “War, Pivot, and Competition - Two Decades of Making Asia Policy” from 1-2:30pm TODAY at the Capitol Visitor Center. We hope to see you there. It's not too late to register!

Speaker Spotlight 🔎: Ely Ratner

Ely Ratner served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs from 2021-2025. Prior to that, Dr. Ratner was the Executive Vice President and Director of Studies at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS). Dr. Ely Ratner is currently a principal at The Marathon Initiative. He graduated with a B.A. from Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley.

Speaker Spotlight 🔎 Randall G. Schriver

Randall G. Schriver served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs from 2018-2019. He also served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs (2003-2005). Prior to that, he was an active duty Navy Intelligence Officer (1989-1991). Mr. Schriver is currently Chairman of the Board of the Institute for Indo-Pacific Security, as well as a partner at Pacific Solutions LLC. He graduated with a B.A. in History from Williams College and an M.A. from Harvard University.

Speaker Spotlight 🔎: David Shear

David Shear served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs from 2014-2016. He served as Ambassador to Vietnam (2011-2013) and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs (2009-2011). Mr. Shear is currently Senior Advisor of the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He graduated with a B.A. from Earlham College and an M.A. from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

Speaker Spotlight 🔎: Mark Lippert

Mark W. Lippert served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs from 2012-2013. He also served as Ambassador to the Republic of Korea (2014-2017) and Chief of Staff to the Secretary of Defense (2013-2014). Prior to that, he served as a U.S. Navy intelligence officer. Mr. Lippert is currently Executive Vice President for Samsung Electronics. He graduated with a B.A. in Political Science and an M.A. in International Policy Studies from Stanford University.

Speaker Spotlight 🔎: Wallace “Chip” Gregson

Wallace C. Gregson served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs from 2009-2011. Prior, he served as Commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Pacific and Commander, Marine Corps Bases Japan. LtGen Gregson is currently President of WC Gregson & Associates. LtGen Gregson was commissioned from the U.S. Naval Academy and later obtained master’s degrees from the Naval War College and Salve Regina College. He also holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Maryland University College in Okinawa.

Speaker Spotlight 🔎: James Shinn

James Shinn served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs from 2007-2008. Dr. Shinn also served as National Intelligence Officer for East Asia (2003-2006) and Senior Advisor, Economics Bureau (2020). Dr. Shinn worked in Silicon Valley and was Visiting Lecturer at Princeton University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science from 2009-2016. Dr. Shinn is currently an investor and advisor to several high-tech start-ups. He graduated with a B.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton and an MBA from Harvard.
