Black people in the U.S. are more likely to have asthma and food allergies. Disease prevention and management starts with education and awareness.

We attended the Juneteenth celebration, hosted by the Inova Black Leader Advisory Council (BLAC) Team Member Resource Group. We shared our resources on asthma and food allergies.

By raising awareness and promoting education on these diseases, we can empower communities to take action and improve health outcomes for all!

Symptoms of alpha-gal syndrome can range from mild to severe and often appear 3-6 hours after eating red meat.

Common symptoms of alpha-gal allergy include:
- Hives or an itchy rash
- Severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Heartburn or indigestion
- Coughing, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing
- Swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, or eyelids
- Dizziness or a drop in blood pressure

When symptoms are getting worse quickly and affect more than one body part, it is called anaphylaxis. This needs immediate treatment with epinephrine.

Grass pollen allergy is one of the most common causes of allergy symptoms.

You may have a runny nose, coughing, sneezing, or itchy and watery eyes. Stay away from pollen as much as you can to reduce your allergy symptoms.

AAFA's asthma & allergy friendly Certification Program independently tests products against strict scientific standards. Products that earn this certification are proven to reduce your exposure to indoor allergens, like pollen.

If you’re experiencing seasonal allergy symptoms right now, it might be because of a grass pollen allergy!

Areas in the western part of the U.S. have seen spikes in grass pollen and a longer pollen season. Cities like Boise, Idaho, and San Diego, California, rank high on our 2026 Allergy Capitals® report because of grass pollen’s impact.
